Scenes from the accident which injured two.
PWWI Jl PIIIIMHI
By Steve Simpson
It was a warm, bright and quite
average Monday afternoon at the
King Kullen Shopping Center in
Bethpage. Lunch hour was settHng
down. No one was prepared for the
"out of control" burgundy Deha 88
that would hit two pedestrians, collide
with a van, and change the course of
many people's lives.
"I was in the process of getting in
the van when I saw the car hit the
two ladies and come towards me and
plow into my van. He had to be doing
thirty miles an hour or better. I'm
lucky I was in the van," said Gerard
Mahlmeister, a driver for Bethpage
Bouquet. Well, Gerard, perhaps we're
lucky your van was parked where it
was or the car may have gone on to
hurt even more pedestrians. Billy
Nimmo, the owner of Bethpage
Bouquet stated that this is not the first
of this type of accident in our shopping
center. "1 had a car go through my
store two years ago on Valentine's
Day. Ihafs why 1 don't park my car
in the front or have my counter up
front/' Mr. Niniino wcni on to sav.
The policemen on the scene were very
courteous and professional. However,
the detective was not very cooperative
with me. After finally contacting the
Police Public Information Office at
the police headquarters we learned
that the operator of the vehicle was
Mr. Leo Miller, 85, of Bethpage, who
was pulling out of a parking lot when
he apparently lost control of his
vehicle and hit 2 pedestrians, Ann
Coleman, 83, of Florida, and Kathleen
Herzog, 48, of Bethpage. Both were
taken to Nassau County Medical
Center. Ann Coleman was taken via
helicopter due to her condition. The
two women still remain hospitalized
with Ann Coleman still in intensive
care.
The Tribune extends get well wishes
to the two women and we pray for
their speedy recovery. The police
officers as well as rescue workers
should be commended for ihcir
expertise and efficiency in dealing with
this terrible accident.
A hearing for Mr. Miller will be
set to determine il he is able to
continue to operate a motor \chicle.
