VOL. 24 NO. 36 August 9-15, 1991 25 CENTS
Second Annual
In Full Sifiring
The Central Park Historical Society
of Bethpage, a nonprofit, educational
organization chartered by the New
York State Board of Regents, conceived
of an annual Bethpage Day as
a way of uniting the community,
honoring its community organizations
and promoting interest in its heritage.
Most of the time each group is aware
of its own organization but on Bethpage
Day we all come together and
become aware of what other groups
are contributing.
Some groups recognize our youth
with scholarships, devoting hours of
their time to the children of our
community and to quote Linda Man-gano,
"to fight hunger, to honor
special people and help the needy."
All this to "keep the quality of the
hamlet they all love."
This year as well as last, Bethpage
Day will have 2 phases - the parade
and the coming-together of the organizations
at the Community Park. The
Bethpage Community Park, a facility
of the Town of Oyster Bay, with the
assistance of Councilman Leonard
Kunzig, will continue to provide a
setting for the Town Showmobile
activities and for more than 40 booths
managed by various local organizations.
The latter are given the opportunity
to alert the community to their
contributions and to raise money not
for private interest groups but for
community projects. Food, refreshment
and activities will be available
all day.
Utilization of the Community Park
offered pleasant surroundings, picnic
areas and tables, and convenient
parking which was available at the
Bethpage High School and the Grumman
entrance. The Central Park
Historical Society was grateful to the
Towili of Oyster Bay for allowing the
use (jf the Community Park which
provii^es a safe, relaxed atmosphere
for families and their children.
Thjs year Bethpage Day will take
place on Saturday, October 5th, 1991
with ^ rain date of October 12th. It
symb(|)lizes the start of a new community
year after the summer hiatus
- a tirfie when organization spring to
life wjth goals for the ensuing year.
Once ^gain, Danny Schiavetta, President
of the CPHS, has stated that
the organizations will be able to keep
the proceeds they raise. The Society's
interest is to contribute the setting
which will help each community
achieve its goal of community service.
The C P H S , a nonprofit educational
organization, will take its place
alongside of the fellow organizations.
Through the proceeds it obtains from
its bo(t>th, it will raise funds for
providing educational programs pertaining
to the history of Bethpage and
Long Island for its members and
Bethpage students.
Mostj groups which participated in
BDAY 1990 have again expressed
their intent to participate in BDAY
1991. Remember there is still time for
community organizations, churches
and schools to participate. The final
planning meeting for BDAY will be
on Thursday, September 19th at 8 PM
in the Powell Avenue Library. More
information can be obtained by calling
931-04U
Remember the organization which
is succesiful is made up of people who
are not looking for credit for what
they do.

A proposal by Oyster Bay Town
Supervisor Angelo A. Delligatti to
eliminate all 12 hour parking meters
from municipal parking fields in the
Town of Oyster Bay will be the subject
of a Tuesday, August 20, hearing by
the Town Board.
"Since my election as Town Supervisor,
I have worked hard to ease the
burden on the Town's resident commuters
by providing additional parking,"
Supervisor Delligatti stated.
"After hearing from commuters about
the inconvenience meters add to an
already hectic commuting routine, 1
requested the Department of Public
Works lo conduct a study to determine
the practicality of commuter
parking meters and the feasibility of
removing them.
"The findmgs mdicated that, in
addition to the direct fmancial cost
to the individual commuter, the
Town's revenue form the meters
barely covers the cost of operating and
maintaininga them," the Supervisor
went on to say, "This, coupled with
concerns expressed lo me by commuters,
led me to the conclusion that the
meters are not serving the best
interests of either commuters or the
Town."
The Supervisor noted that even
without the meters, a Town permit
would still be required to park in
lown commuter parking fields.
fhe meeting will take place in the
hearing room of Town Hall East,
Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, beginning
at 10 a.m.
