BETHPAGE GOES
THE DISTANCE IN
ULTRAMARATHON
There were lots of heroes in the
Long Island 12 and 24 hour Ultra-marathon
Challenge Run held in
Bethpage on May 10 and 11, but the
biggest hero of all was the Bethpage
community for its support of this
outstanding athletic event.
Donna McGovern, who was the
winner of the Women's Division in
last year's 24 Hour Run, switched to
the 12 Hour Run this year, and the
results were nothing short of spectacular.
The tough lady from Lynbrook
finished with 74 1/4 miles, 86 yards,
beating not only seven other female
competitors (the closest by 16 miles),
but also beating all 25 male competitors,
finishing 3 1/2 miles ahead of
2nd place finisher Dave Obelkovich
of New York City.
In the process, Donna broke the
previous event and Long Island 12
Hour women's record of 73 miles, set
by Kay Moore in 1985.
With no women entered in the 24
Hour Run, the men took charge, with
Luis Rios and Nick Palazzo leading
the way. Both veteran endurance
athletes logged 106 1/4 miles, excellent
totals for a rather warm day. Lew
Cullen finished third with 102 3/4
miles, 124 yards, and 4th place finisher
John Kenul rounded out the century
club with 102 miles, 320 yards.
Two Bethpage residents, lom
Podolsky and Matty O'Connell,
competed in the 12 Hour Run. Tom
took 15th place with 53 1/2 miles, 114
yards, and Matty logged 51 miles, 51
yards to take 19th place.
The event was held at the new all
weather quarter mile track at the
Bethpage High School, under the
auspices of the Plainview-Old Bethpage
Road Runners Club. Mindy
Lerner served as race director and
technical assistance was provided by
Finish Line Promotions.
Key sponsorship was provided by
Bretton's Deli and Jacques Caterers,
both establishments located on Broadway
in Bethpage. An emergency
medical team from the Bwehtpage
Fire Department was on hand for the
better part of the event to insure
against any eventuality, and the
support provided by the Bethpage
School District and the staff at
Bethpage High School was nothing
short of fantastic.
