In May of this year, the Bethpage
Tribune reported a problem of ground
water contamination at the Grumman
Corporation in Bethpage. This prob­lem
began back in 1974 when odors
were detected from the Aerospace
Corporation's water supply.
Grumman immediately notified the
Nassau County Board of Health and
the Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) to examine their
site. It was determined at that time
that their drinking water exceeded the
then State standard of 10 parts per
million. Grumman Immediately

purposes and began using Bethpage
and Hicksville water for their drinking
supply.
Although no one admits liability,
Mr. Cassell stated that it is possible
this contamination entered the ground
in the I940's due to Grumman's
manufacturing procedures while it is
also possible that because the aero­space
company pumps such a large
amount of water that these contam-inents
could have been drawn from
neighboring manufacturing plants.

BRETTON BENEFIT BOWL
ALREADY RAISES $8000
The 3rd Annual Bretton's Charity
Football Game has really gotten off
to an impressive start. In just a few
short weeks Gary Bretton, game
chairman has already collected an
impressive $8,000, toward their goal
of $15„000. Last year, these "cleated
wonders" raised $10,000, all going to
needy Bethpage families during the
holiday season. This game has truly
turned into a Bethpage tradition, and

The 2nd Annual Bowlathon spon­sored
by the Bethpage Rotary Club
and the Bethpage Tribune is right
around the corner... Saturday,
December 1 at 7:30 pm at Woodbury
Lanes in Hicksville. This year's game
will benefit Jim and Gerry Wilkeyson
both of Bethpage. Jim was diagnosed
with leukemia which necessitated an
extremely expensive bone marrow
rightly so, as it virtually unites an
entire community and helps residents
who are less fortunate enjoy the up
and coming holiday.
So often, in a time when gift buying
and choosing preoccupies our mind,
\NQ forget that for some the holidays
are the gloomiest time of all. Many
are alone or unable to afford festive
meals or even that special little toy

transplant in a Seattle Hospital. This
gift of life truly has given the newly
married couple a chance to live their
lives happily and healthily together
although it has left them quite finan­cially
damaged. Bills are estimated to
top the $300,000 mark.

The date and time has been set for
the Bethpage Chamber of Commer­ce's
official Lighting Ceremony. The
event will take place on Dec. 5 at 7:00
pm on Broadway (directly in front of
the Chamber of Commerce Tree). In
fact Santa himself will be on hand for
the fun and festivities, along with
music and fun for the entire family.
The Chamber of Commerce also
extends its sincere thanks and appre­ciation
for supporting their "bright
idea" and allowing them to reach their
goal of $8000.00. We ail did it together
and when each of us walks or drives,
through Bethpage, look up and take
pride in a truly beautifully decorated
town.
