A STORY OF COURAGE AND LOVE
Wilkeyson's of Bethpage
Receive Gift Of Life
Jim Wilkeyson, a 1977 graduate of
Bethpage High School and his fiance
Gerry Duffy, a 1982 graduate were
much like any other couple who were
about to tie the knot. They were busy
with all the plans and preparation for
the big day although their biggest day
of ail was to come weeks later. You
see....
When Jim and Gerry Wilkeyson
were married this past Aug. 4 in St.
Martins, they knew they would be
"honeymooning" in Seattle, Washington
at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Center for the next 4
months.
During November of 1989, Jim was
diagnosed as having Chronic Myelogenous
Leukemia (CM L), a type of
leukemia that could be treated with
a bone marrow transplant, when and
if a suitable marrow donor could be
found. Extensive testing began. First
with Jims family, which proved
negative for a match. Nationwide
testing was done through the National
Marrow Donor Program, and after
many "possibles" still no positive
donor. The next alternative was the
Anthony Nolan Registry in London,
England. Alter months of extensive
and expensive chromosome matching.
tissuetyping and antibody testing
between donor and recipient, Jim was
told he had a positive donor from
London.
On August 20, sixteen days after
their wedding, Jim and Gerry flew to
Seattle to begin treatments that
involved large doses of chemotherapy
and radiation to prepare him for his
bone marrow transplant, "A Gift of
Life" which he received on September
13.
Jim's prognosis is good, but he still
has a long recovery ahead. During the
100 days after the transplant and for
1 year after they return home infection
is a very serious concern and every
precaution must be taken.
Through local blood drives, a blood
sample can be taken for HLA tesdng.
This is a process in which blood is
typed to be added to donor registeries
lor use in marrow transplants. More
are needed. If you are interested in
becoming a donor, contact the Greater
New York Blood Bank in Melville.
Through determination, dedication
and so much love this remarkable
Bethpage couple received the gift of
life us their wedding prcs-
