EDITORIAL COMMENT
It is not nomuUfy Ore policy of
on its front page„..tbis boufever,
In Tuesday's Newsday article
regarding the Filippa Savoy murder
which took place in 1987, Mr. Arnold
Abrams, writer of the article seems
to be a little off base and out of line
in his depiction of Bethpage, the town
which the alleged conspiiator Rocco
Panetta owned and operated a tanning
salon. Mr. Abrams describes the area
of Broadway (north of the tracks) as
a "run down part of town". Run down,
Mr. Abrams, I beg to differ! I can
venture to say that Broadway is no
more run down than local shopping
areas where you live. It is truly an
insult to residents and business owners
in that area to use such inappropriate,
inflamatory adjectives when describing
a town that is and has a right to
be quite proud. Mr. Abrams, it seems
quite obvious that your choice of "run
down", "blue collar bar" and the like
are just used to sensationalize and
spice up your story. It would have
been more appropriate for you to
mention that the town in which Ms.
Savoy had her "secret life" was
responsible for raising over $12,000 to
this newspaper to put editorials
was an excpetion,
feed the hungry or was responsible for
building a LEM which enabled men
to land on the moon. Or perhaps you
could have used words such as close-knit,
spirited, hardworking or quaint
when describing this town. And when,
may 1 ask, Mr. Abrams, was the last
time you rode through our town and
were you blindfolded? We never
claimed to be the 'Miracle Mile' but
we certainly won't sit and let so^neone
call our town run down.
The the next time you choose to
write an article referring to Bethpage,
maybe you should take a good look
around before you insult a community
with misused words and phrases. We
live in this town, you don't. The
impact of such statement could be
devastating to businesses and
residents.
And.my I remind you, sir, that if
the 16,000 plus residents in this, as
you put it, "run down part of town"
decided to cancel their Newsday
subscription, you my dear friend,
would perhpas be out of a job.

For the love of cats, a group of three
women found each other feeding ,
homeless cats on the streets of Bethpage,
behind the VFW building. They
never quite felt completely satisfied
with merely providing the homeless
cats with food and water; they knew
deep down in their hearts what they
really wished for these cats: spaying/
neutering and subsequently, adoption
in a nice home.
The name of the group is known
as the Bethpage Homeless Cats (BHC)
and is now made up of five women.
We have been in operation for less
than three weeks and have alrei^y
captured three kittens and four cats.
Three of the kittens have already been
adopted (they will remain indoors at
all times) and the four cats are now
being spayed. Now comes the problem:
Dr. Jeffrey Siegel who is defending
our homeless cats in Levittown
735-0090 (Island Trees Veterinary
Hospital) has conveyed to us that they
are sociable, are disease-free and it
would be a pity to put them back on
the street.
For the love of cats, we need people
who can and will provide a warm and
loving home for these precious,
homeless cats and kittens. Please open
up your heart and adopt one or more,
and for free adoption arrangements,
contact Barbara Quealy at (516) 822-
3331. Also, contributions to help us
pay for spaying and neutering and
shots are gratefully accepted and will
help^^us with our cause. By spaying
and neutering we will prevent
unwanted kittens from being born on
the streets of Bethpage.
Thank you from the bottom of our
hearts.
