VOL. 23 NO. 47 Celebrating Our 23r'1 Year October 4-10, 1990 Celebrating Our 23rd Year IS CENTS
Belbpage Celebrates the First Amud Belbpage Day
After months of preparation, anticipation
and old fashioned elbow
grease, the first annual Bethpage Day
has finally arrived. Certainly, this
celebration marks a special moment
in the history of our town, and is a
celebration that the entire community
has eagerly awaited. But why is the
town of Bethpage worthy of such a
celebration? Well, I'm glad you
asked...this is one subject I am quite
opinionated on.
Webster's Dictionary defines the
word community as "mutual participation;
the public; a society of
persons under the same law." Perhaps
Mr. Webster had Bethpage in mind
when he arrived at the definition, as
this town is a true community in every
sense of the word. We are a town that
understands the phrase 'mutual participation'
so very well and exemplifies
that phrase with celebrations such as
this one. The residents of this town
come together to fight hunger, to
honor special residents, to help the
needy and to fight to keep the quality
of the hamlet they all love. Sure every
community has its faults. Not enough
this and perhaps too much of that.
But plain and simply Bethpage is a
wonderful place to live, work and
play.
This community offers its residents
the very best of school districts, a
wonderful and dedicated Fire Department
and an effective Police Department.
We boast beautiful recreation
areas and athletic facilities to satisfy
a variety of sports enthusiasts. And
what attribute of Bethpage have I
forgotten to mention ... a large
attribute. Its residents! You! Each and
every one of you who smile as ^ou
walk through town, each and every
one of you who get involved in helping
your fellow residents and each and
every one of you who have helped to
make this truly a town of mutual
participation. I see you in our local
shops, chatting with our merchants.
I've heard your stories of Bethpage
days gone by, and I see that gleam
in your eye as you mention Uncle
Bob's, the Beau Se Jour or the old
glass factory. I see you browsing
through town with your strollers full
of smiling children who will have the
privilege of growing up in a town that
is safe and caring. And I see your
excited smiles as you put the finishing
touches on that very first home.
Young or old, established residents or
new, each and every resident has
helped to form a town that cares, a
town that is united and a town to be
proud of. We might not have all the
excitement of Manhattan or the lure
of a beach community. But we have
something more, something much
more ... we have dedication and spirit
to a town we all have chosed to call
home.
So stand up and take a bow
Bethpage. This is your moment in the
spotUght and it is a moment you have
truly earned.
On a personal note, I would like
to thank all of you who have made
my job the best job this Bethpage born
and raised girl could ever have,

Bethpage Day is upon us and

special day. Local organizations,
merchants and residents truly have
worked quite hard to make the dream
of this celebration a reality. Special
thanks and applause should \x given
to the Central Park Historical Society
who are the driving force and geniuses
behind this special day. The Historical
Society led by Danny Schiavctta
began this enormouus undertaking
over a year ago and should truly be
commended on this momentous
event. Bravo! Bravo!! Dont forget to
