VOL 23 NO. 48 Celebrating Out 23r'1 Year October 11-17, 1990 Celebrating Our 23rd Year as CENTS
First Annual Bethpage Day, October 6, Huge Success
By Linda Antonelli
My hats off to the Central Park
Historical Society...you guys sure
know how to throw a party...and a
true celebration it was. October 6,
1990 the first Annual Bethpage Day
was a rousing success. The festivities
began with an impressive parade that
stretched throughout the town of
Bethpage doned in red, white and
blue. The streets were lined with
smiling and waving Bethpagians who
took to the sidewalk to help celebrate
their town and the people who make
it, as Dan Schiavetta puts it, "one heck
of a place to live." We drove in the
parade and chanted right along with
the spectators in a cheer of "Bethpage!
Bethpage!" And we marveled in the
other paraders who strutted their love
for this town in all forms.
We then arrived at the community
park where we were joined by 40
other organizations who displayed
informative and entertaining booths
representing their organizations.
There were gold fishing catching booths,
picture taking booths, a flea market,
a voter registration booth, a child
fingerprinting booth, food...oh gosh
there was food and entertainment to
satisfy every taste.
There were raffles that kept everyone
on their toes just waiting to see
if their number would be called. Much
too many activities and fun to even
begin to describe.
And yet it was the togetherness and
the community spirit that impressed
me the most. Seeing old friends and
neighbors talking about the good all
days. It was truly a day Bethpage
displayed their colors with pride. A
day we stopped to celebrate the town
we all love. And, I for one, say it was
worth every bit of hard work, elbow
grease and effort that it took to make
it possible. To the Central Park
Historical Society I personally would
like to extend my sincere thanks and
gratitude in making this very special
celebration possible. Oh and only 358
more days till the 2nd Annual...get
busy!
The Tribune got into the spirit of things and fMuraded their iove for Bethpage
with 2 great big hearte.
The Central Park Historical Society's rendition of the old Powell Avenue
School, with tocher Anne M^in and student, was once again my choice
as best float.
emories of a Marvelous Celebration
by Margaret Carvo
The first annual Bethpage Day
became a reality which left us with
warm memories of a day when the
people of Bethpage came together for
the good of the community. Under the
bright, blue October skies, the Bethpage
Community Park came alive
with music, entertainment, booths,
vendors, the smell of pepper and
onions and a barbecued pig. The lacy
strands of cotton candy were blowing
in the breeze and the kids ran around,
plucking them out of the air and
popping them into their mouths. It
was free cotton candy for those who
could catch it.
Everything and everyone wa.s great!
There was the water district "sculpture"
with free samples of the second
best lasting water in New York State.
For those who wanted their picture
in an old World War i plane or in
the more contemporary space suit,
Grumman with the help of the Care
Cats distributed complimentary photos
to them.
There were personalized painter's
hats, face painting, temporary tattoo-1
ing, win a goldfish game, treasures on i
the flea market table, free copies oi ;
the Bethpage Tribune and the I
Chamber of Commerce "We care to j
share" Directory. In addition to the j
splendid performance of their Blue i
Lions band, the Nassau County Police !
Department were graciously a.ssigning |
I.I), photos, fingerprints to willing }
children for their protection. j
The parade which culminated at the \
park was led by the Nassau County i
Police Department Mounted Police !
displaying the American Flag and \
their banners and Danny Schiavetta, j
Grand Marshal ol the Parade and ;
President of (he Central Park Histor- {
ical Society. There were bagpipes, i
police olficers, Bethpage firemen as i
always resplendent in their uniforms. |
Cheerleaders and children marched
representing athletic organizations,
the Bethpage Schools and St. Martin's
School.
It was a great day - one accomplished
by the people of Bethpage for
the people of Bethpage.
