Less than ten days to Bethpage Day
and the Central Park Historical
Society Historical Society, sponsors
of the day, are happy to report that
everything is progressing according to
plan.
The parade starting at 10:00 AM
will consist of several marching bands
the Nassau County Police Bagpipe
Band, Bethpage High School Band,
and Junior High School Band. There
will also be thirty participating groups
including many floats and antique
cars. The parade will end at the
Community Park.
At the Community Park, there will
be activities for everyone. On the
Showraobile, there will be performances
by Christine and the Razors, St.
Martin's Players, Nassau County
Police Concert Band (The Blue
Lions), Norma's School of Dance, and
the Long Island Banjo Society.
Scattered throughout the park area
there will be more than thirty local
groups with displays, food and beverage
booths, demonstrations and
other exhibits.
There will also be a Merchants'
Raffle - prizes donated by local
merchants. These prizes include many
gift certificates, catered parties,
baskets of cheer, and services (such
as limousine services). Many of the
prizes have a value of over a hundred
dollars. The grand prize is a 27" color
TV donated by the Grumman Corporation.
Tickets for these prizes can
be purchased from any merchant or
member of the Historical Society or
by caUing 931-0472 or 931-8345.
A limited number of commemorative
T-shirt proclaiming the First
Annual Bethpage Day with the Logo
of the Central Park Historical Society
will also be available for sale. Anyone
desiring a shirt prior to Bethpage Day
can call 935-6529.
As an added attraction there will
be an antique car show held at the
parking field of the Community Park.
No cars will be allowed in the park
that day. However there will be
parking available across l?6m the park
at the High School parking lots.
Grumman has also agreed to open the
gate on the road opposite the high
school tennis courts (at the traffic
light). Cars may enter and park on
either side of the road going into
Grumman. From here it will be a short
walk to the park. The park gate on
Stewart Avenue by the pool will be
opened.

family and friends and make it a real
fun day! Oh, and don't forget your
cameras!!

RING THEM BELLS: The Peak Family Hand Bell Ringers will entertain
visitors to this year's Long Island Fair, set for Oct. 5-8 at the Old Bethpage
Village Restoration.
The Long Island Fair, one of
America's oldest agricultural festivals,
will celebrate its 148th birthday this
year when it returns to Old Bethpage
Village Restoration on the Columbus
Day weekend. Hours are 10 AM to
5 PM. The 4-day event (Oct. 5-8) will
be chock full of exhibits and activities
geared to please every member of the
family, according to Nassau County
Executive Thomas S. Gulotta.
New this year to the Fair is a recreation
of the Peak Family Hand Bell
Ringers, who introduced this melodious
art to the United States in 1839.
The family is portrayed by the Suffolk
County Hand Bell Ringers. Back for
the second year will be the "Great
Juggling Phenomenon" presented by
the world-renown Jugglers Guild of
Northampton, Massachusetts.
Other entertainment will include
puppet shows, magic shows, brass
band concerts, and much more. The
fair will also feature country dancing,
camel and elephant rides, a managerie,
a pumpkin patch and traditional
music.
The Fair hits been held continuously
on l>ong island since 1842, and is the
official fair of the Agricultural Society

of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties,
noted Nassau Recreation and
Parks Commissioner John B. Kier-nan,
whose department co-sponsors i
the event. The numerous farm and |
domestic exhibits will be judged and i
awarded prizes. Categories include i
agricultural produce, horticulture,!
domestic arts, poultry, livestock, draft \
horses, and juniur exhibits by youths {
15 and under. Agricultural contests,!
such as plowing, corn husking and log j
sawing will also lake place. |
I he exhibits and entertainment will j
be held mostly under colorful tents |
on the Village's fairgrounds. Old-1
fashioned shops will feature goodies j
for sale such as jelly apples, doughnuts,
peanuts, pumpkins, apples and
gifts. A cafeteria is located in the
reception center.
Commissioner Kiernan noted that
the fair is celebrating its 20lli year ai

which re-creates a small Long Island
farming village of the pre-Civii War
era All building are original 18th and
i9th century structures moved to
the site, including homes, a church,
schoolhouse, inn, blacksmith shop,
