5^/75/(7/' /.ei/y Ca//s on the Department of Transportation to Address the Decaying of this Widely Used Path
Slalc Senator Norman .1. I.c\y
(k.C"-Merrick). Chairman ot the
Senate Iransporlation C\)mmittee,
has called on the New York State
Department of I ransporlation (IX) I)
to conduct an immediate clean-up ol
the Bethpage Bicycle Path, adjacent
to the Bethpage State Parkway and
to implement an improved maintenance
program on an on-going basis
throughout the year.
!.e\\ said that he has received complaints
from constituents, including
members ol Long Island bicycling
clubs, over the deteriorating condition
ol the bicycle path. According to
Robert Kerschbaum. ol the (irumman
Cycle I ouring Club, and Hric Landau
t)! the Massapequa Park Bicycle Club,
the Bethpage bike path has deteriorated
to the point that riding on it
can be dangerous, with broken pavement
at dilTerent points and sand and
broken glass co\ ering it a other points.
Additionally, grass and underbrush
ha\e overgrown the path, reducing its
original eight loot width to lour leet
in several places, and bushes and tree
branches have encroached the path,
making it nearly impossible to avoid
being struck in the lace when riding.
Le\y. in a letter to DO! Regional
Director .lames Ku/loski, urged the
DO I to expeditiously undertake a
clean-up of the popular bike path and
to make appropriate maintenance
improvements to ensure that the many
cyclists that use the path lor training,
recreational riding and even commuting
as well as countless runners and
walkers who avail themselves oi the
path, continue to do so in the luture.
' i am hopeful that the DOT will
respond expeditiously to my request
so that cyclists, joggers, walkers and
others will once again have 'smooth
traveling' when using the Bethpage
Bike Path." concluded Lew.
