ADMIRAL RICHARD E. BVRDS PLANE, "THE STARS AND
STRIPES", is part of the collection of vintage and space age aircraft and
memorabilia on display at the Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchel Field.
The Museum opens for the season on Saturday, April 7,
iOYSTER BAY TOWN COUNCILMAN Thomas L. Clark and Town
K^ouncilwoman Ann R. Ocker present a citation to Assistant Chief Cary Hearn
jof the Bethpage Fire Department Rescue Squad. The entire squad was honored
|by Hicksville Elks Lodge No. 1931 at its annual *^Fireman of the Year'' awards.

The Cradle ol Aviation Museum,
New York's only major air and space
facility will rc-open tor the season on
Saturday, April 7, announced Nassau
County Executive! homas S. Ciulotta.
Museum hours are Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday, from Noon to 5 P.M.
Admission is free.
The Museum, located in World
War II hangars at Milchel Field in
Uniondale, houses a fascinating collection
of airplanes and space related
items tracing Long island's aviation
history from pioneering days to i\n:
space age. Rooseveh and Mitchcl
Fields were centers of the golden age
of record breaking flights in the twenties
and thirties, the most notable
being Lindbergh's epic st)io transatlantic
crossing in 1927. And long
Island was a major center foi the aviation
industry since the advent of the
airplane.

provide the historic basis of dramatic
exhibits. Vi.sitors will see a 1903
Wright Flyer, the Wtighi Vin FJ?. the
Herring-Curtiss Golden Flyer, a 1918

P-47. Seabec 1-84 and i-105,
Lindbergh's first airplane, a Cuniss
JN-4, Cirumman's F"6F Hellcat. F-9F

an original I unar Mod\ile and man>
other air aiid space craft. The plane
Admiral Richard Byrd used to explore
the Antarctic in the 192()s and 30s,
'The Stars and Stiijjcs," is also on
display.
