Town Renews Borella Athletic Fields
Agreement for Eighteen Months
The Oyster Bay Town Board today
(June 19) authorized an eighteen-month
renewal of an agreement with
the Bethpage School District for the
use of the Borella Farms Athletic
Fields, it was announced by Town
Councilman John Venditto.
"The Town previously had negotiated
with the school district a six-month
agreenient for use of the fields,
which expires on June 30," Venditto
explained. "Under the new agreement,
which runs from July 1 through
December 31, 1991, the Town will be
permitted to continue maintaining
and managing the three playing fields,
which are located on school district
property in the vicinity of Plainview
and Myron Roads.
"We are most pleased with the
extension of this agreement," Venditto
stated, "as it will assure the Bethpage
PAL, Little League and Soccer Club,
all of which have been using the
Borella Farms facilities for a number
of years, playing fields for the next
couple of seasons.
PREDIOAMENT
by Linda Antonelii As if Bethpage's parking
situation wasn't bad
enough a new proposal has
been made to amend a
former Town Board resolution dealing
with public parking in our lown.
In a proposal Councilman Thomas
Clarke has called for the following
changes.
In parking field B-1 (which is
directly behind the now empty Variety
store) the 106 stalls which arc now
unrestricted two hour parking will be
changed to 106 unrestricted, ten cents
for two hours metered stalls.
In parking field B-4 (which is on
the west side of Photonews Long Island
Corporation) the 4 stalls which are
presently unresticted two hour parking
would be changed to 4 unrestricted
ten cents for two hours metered stalls.
In parking field B-5 (which is on
the south side of the railroad on the
Broadway side) the 14 stalls which are
now unrestricted two hour parking
would be changed to 14 unrestricted,
ten cents for two hours stalls. Also
in parking field B-5 the 194 stalls
which are now permit only will be
changed to 194 permit required,
metered stalls.
The same would hold true for
parking fields B-6 (located south of
the railroad on the Stewart Avenue
side) with 80 stalls presently requiring
permit only and parking field B-7
(which is located south of Baldwin
Place)with 44 stalls. Ihese 124 stalls
would now be changed to permit
required metered parking.
The Bethpage Tribune spoke with
Councilman Clarke, who has also
been involved with parking problems
in the town of Hicksville. We told him
that the parking situation in Bethpage
is already insufficient and that further
restrictions on these parking fields
would hurt local businesses as well as
prove to be quite costly for commuters,
Clarke assured us that this
proposal is not etched in stone. He
went on to say that the impact of these
changes would not be felt until
November and that if thev proved to
hurt business or the lown'in any way
that they would be changed to benefit
the community.
We also asked the Councilman
what the reasoning was behind all the
changes. He told us that revenue was
not the driving force behind the
changes and that certainly the cost of
implementing the metering would
outway any expected revenue. He
simply slated that since the electrification
of the railroad more commuter
parking has been requested and this
proposal is designed to address that
need.
Personally, my opinion is that it
seems foolish to implement such a
system and then have to change it if
it proves to be a hinderancc. ! can't
imagine the meters being removed if
the system tails. Councilman Clarke
said, however that if the merchants
needed a change or more parking that
it could be provided. It is already quite
difficult to patroni/e Bethpage busi-ncs.
ses with the parking situation as
it stands. What's your opinion on this
parking predicament? Write in and tell
us. Send your comments to the
Tribune at 329 Broaidwav. Bethpage,
New York 11714.
There will be a public hearing on
July 10 at 10AM at Town Hall in
0\sier Bay to discuss the proposal.
The Bethpage Chamber ol Commerce
will be represented at that hearing to
voice their concerns. All are urged to
attend.
