DOQQii DOG DiLiliMA
It's four months later and four
months warmer and our 'Bethpage
'Cat-tastrophy' has
improved slightly at the American
Legion Hall on Washington
Street. There still is a good many little
kitties, who for one reason or another,
refuse to be evicted although now this
'Cat-tastrophy' has literally gone to
the dogs. Yes...DOGS, man's best
friend apparently wants equal billing
at the American Legion Hall. This
problem however, is not that there is
an overabundance of these problem
pups...the problem lies with the
owners of these dogs.
Apparently, various dog owners in
the vicinity of the American Legion
Hall have forgetten about the Town
of Oyster BJ^ Pooper Scooper Law and
have decided that the lawn area
around the Hall be designated as a
'Doggy Restroom.' As if the American
Legion didn't have there hands filled
already trying to solve there cat
problem, now they have the problem
of dogs defecating on their properly
which is making maintanance of the
lawn area messy and quite difficult.
We spoke with a member of the
American Legion and he told us that
this problem is just adding to the woes
of the Hall. He stated that presently
there is a young man who maintains
the grass area around the facility and
that this "doggy mess" has made his
job a horror. The American Legion
has really been trying to keep the Hall
in good shape and now finds it's
getting 'Dog-gone' impossible.
This truly is not a laughing matter.
The American Legion Hall is an
important part of Bethpage. It is used
by various Bethpage clubs and organizations
as well as for many social
functions by residents. This disregard
is not fair to the owners of the Hall
or its patrons and certainly there is
not one homeowner in our community
who would stand for such a thing at
their house.
So 1 urge all the 'Puppy-parents' out
there to be considerate and be respos-ible
when walking your dogs. The
American Legion Hall is a beautiful
facility which benefits all of the
residents in Bethpage. Defacing this
property or for that matter any other
property is total disregard for your
neighbors. So remember, walking
your dog is fine, curbing your dog is
necessary and picking up after your
furry friend is crucial, responsible and
the law!
Gulotta Tax Break for Nassau Seniors Endorsed by
Board of Supervisors
Nassau County Executive ThomaS
S. Gulotta's expansion of the Senior
Citizen Tax Exemption Program
which will enable additional .senior
citizen homeowners to receive a
reduction on some of their real
property taxes has been approved by
the Nassau County Board of
Supervisors.
"Under enabling State legislation
approved just a few weeks ago, local
municipalities have the option lo
expand the senior citizen tax exemption
program for eligible homeowners
65 years of age and older," Ciuloita
said. "It is rny desire lo provide the
maximum exemption allowed under
State law. I herelore, I am pleased that
the Board of Supervisors has adopted
these changes, which will take effect
immediately. I am gratified that we
are able to provide additional lax
relief lo our golden age citizens, who
in many instances are on fixed
incomes and who have literally built
our Island and made our County what
it is today!"
"While 1 commend our State Legislators
for expanding this vvoriluvhile
tax reduction program, it is my hope
that the State Legislature will amend
the exemptit)n in the near lutuit* it)
exclude Social Security income from
being included as income when calculating
the maximum eligibility
income limit. Since eligibility for a tax
exemption is based on income, too
often seniors are excluded because
cost of living increases (or Social
Security push thorn above the legal
income limit."
