Nassau County Executive Thomas
S. Gulotta today announced the
initiation of a new environmental
program, "The Greenine of Nassau
County." The program, conceived by
the South Shore Audubon Society in
cooperation with the County, includes
a local school tree seedling program,
an annual Earth Day Celebration and
a one thousand dollar donation to the
County for future tree seedling
projects.
"Specifically, the goal of this
program is to plant a quarter of a
million trees by the end of the
twentieth century," commented
County Executive Gulotta, "Green
trees offer our residents esthetic value
as well as a positive impact on the
environment from their absorption of
the excess carbon in the atmosphere."
The local school tree seedUng plan,
is the first phase of the overall
program. The County is accessing
with the South Shore Audubon
Society, New York State Department
of Environmental Conservation to
offer white pine seedlings for students
to plant within their school yards. The
program is being well received by local
public and private schools.
In the second phase, the South
Shore Audubon Society is donating
to County residents a gift of ten
thousand eastern white pine tree
seedlings which were received from the
Weyerhaueser Corporation. The
Society wishes to share this gift with
residents of Nassau County. Therefore,
the County and Audubon
Society will distribute these seedlings
to community organizations free of
charge during Earth Week, April 22nd
through 27th, also on a first come first
serve basis.
The County will also be hosting its
annual Earth Day Celebration on
Sunday, April 22nd at Eisenhower
Park Parking Field #8 from 10:00
A.M. through 4:00 P.M. At this
environmental celebration, the
County will distribute one thousand
white pine tree seedlings to the general
public on first come first serve basis.
"I am delighted to see this outstanding
environmental effort implemented
into a reality," stated Elliot R. Kutner,
Field Trip Director and Charter
Member of the South Shore Audubon
Society. "This cooperative effort of
the Society and Nassau County is truly

Pictured above is the Antique & Collectible Show banner being removed

/' M^"^he wind kicked up and the
1^ sign came down...not quite
m that easy, but on Tuesday,
-.:?li.. April 10, Broadway in Bethpage
was temporarily closed to
remove a banner which was causing
some problems with electric wires and
poles at the intersection of Washington
Street and Broadway.
The banner which was erected on
Sunday, was advertising an Antiques
and Collectibles Show which is being
sponsored by the Bethpage Rotary
Club, a service organizatiotj which
contributes their time and elTorts to
help the community ol Bcthpuge.
When Mother Nature dealt us u
dose of high wind on luesday a police
officer driving by noticed that the
banner was whipping around and
causing the electric wires to do the
same. The telephone poles on either
side of the sign were also swaying, due
to the force of the wind and the
resistance ot the bimner.
The Bethpage Fire Department was
then called to remove the sign. 1 he
banner, which looked quite inpressive
and which was certainly an excellent
publicity tool, was temoved in no time
at all without any problems.
Take heart guys, although the
banner lasted only two days it scorns
as though the event received more
publicity than il it had remained up
until April 29, which is the date of
the Antiques Show. This innocent
little banner caused quite a stir on
} uesday and we can only hope that
ail those individuals who look to the
sidewalks oi Broadway to investigate
the removal of the sign will flock to
Bethpage High School and suppt>rt
the Antique and Collectibles Shov^,
a truly worthwhile Rotary iundraising
event which will benefit the needy oi
our connnunity arid also help fund
scholarships for Bethpage students.
