VOL 22 NO. 49 October 19-October 25, 1989 20 CENTS
If we asked a settled resident, or the most
temporary observer of our community
scene, "whose name do you think of when
hearing the word Bethpage?" It's nearly
certain the answer would be Coach Howie
Vogts.
Over the last forty years Coach Vogt 's
life reads like a history of Bethpage sports.
The numbers and accomplishments are
easy to read. Graciuating Sewanhaka in
1948, Howie moved to Emphoria Colleg
and then to Adelphi, where he graduated
in 1952. In September of that year Howie
began teaching and coaching Bethpage
teams, and has added many chapters to
our schools honors. Except for a sabbatical
spent at Michigan State during 1967-68,
Howie Vogts has been the only varsity
football coach that ourb "Eagles" have
known. During this time, he has been
Mend. And So Muc
clearly the many "Friday nisht dinners"
hosted by Howie and his dear wife
Caroline. The morning breakfasts, the
scouting trips, bon fires, pep rallies,
division titles, and the private talks all come
easily to memory. For those who have, and
are experiencing them now, ajormerplaye^
put it best; "Mr. Vogts was a firm arid
fair teacher-coach. Although he never tJld
you, if you walked onto the football f&fd
at Bethpage with seventy-four other ki
you immediately became part of his sped
family forever. The effort devoted
helping so many kids go to the best colleges
available has never been properly measured,
because Coach Vogts is not the kind
of man to "take the limelight", but remains
a dedicated but gently achiever.
Those who know him well are aware of
his devotion to fishing. He is known to
a .October 14$ 198% the community of Betl

School Athletic Field to Howard C. Vogts. '*
recognized all across Long Island and often
for excellence in coaching. For example,
he has been Newsday 's and the Daily New's
"Coach of the Year," awarded "Nassau
Coach of the Year" and has also been cited
by New York State for winning an
astonishing 183 games which ranks him
among the most successful coaches in the
State.
His innovating skill and energy have
been credited for the founding of our
lacrosse and track teams, and for encouraging
and nourishing the expansion of our
otheK teams. This is something that makes
Coach Vogts particularly proud. But, after
the scores have been counted, and trophies
placed proudly on display, there is still
more to life of Coach Howie Vogts.
Players, cheerleaders, and others close to
the "Eagles" over the decades have many
happy thoughts when talking about
Bethpage football. The players remember
Captains from Freeport to Montauk for
his skill and sense of humor. Retired from
classroom teaching in 1986, Coach Vogts
remains the full time Varsity Football
Coach. As we get close to the I990's Coach
Vogts 5th decade, we realize how perfectly
appropriate it is that the Bethpage Community
has decided to formally name its
gridiron "Howie Vogts Field". This is an
honor that celebrates the past, present, and
future success of the really extraordinary
man.
The entire staff of the Bethpage Tribune
wishes Howie Vogts heartfelt congratulations.
We could think of noone more
deserving of this honor and hope that this
dedication will be a small way of thanking
a man who has given unselfishly and
tirelessly to his community. We are also
sure that October 14 will forever be
remembered with pride as we honored a
man so worthy of tribute.
