Nassau County Executive Thomas
S. Gulotta's Citizen Service Van will
be located at the Plainview-Old
Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old
Country Road, on Thursday, July
13th, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The
Citizen's Service Van was created by
the County Executive to provide
residents with information about
county government and expand the
county's outreach program.
"A primary function of local
government is to reach out and to
make government available and
responsive to our residents in all
corners of the county," Gulotta said.
"One means by Which this can be
achieved is to niaKfe available direct
lines of communication with our
citizenry. Our Citizen's Service Van
will allow our residents to receive
information about the county and
seek redress for their concerns in a
location convenient to their homes.
This is particularly helpful for the
disabled or the elderly who may find
transportation difficult," Gulotta said.
Gulotta said the Citizen's Service
Van would also serve as an excellent
management tool. It will permit
residents and county employees alike,
to forward inquiries and/ or offer their
thoughts with regard to the operation
of various county departments, facil­ities,
service and programs. This will
result in the implementation of greater
efficiency procedures and cost cutting
measures as well as a greater respon­siveness
to the needs of local residents.
Many residents may find it incon­venient
to travel to Mineola in order
to obtain information or to make thier
views known to the appropriate
county officials or agencies. The
Citizen's Service Van will insure that
every resident has an opportunity to
make their views known.
Lyme Disease
Awareness at
Massapequa General
Responding to public concern
regarding the bacterial infection,
Lyme Disease, Massapequa General
Hospital and Caremark, Long Island,
are joining forces to provide the public
with information about the disease.
A public health forum will be held
in the Lecture Hall at Massapequa
General Hospital on July I3th at 7:30

BASEBALL 1860 STYLE will be played at Old Bethpage Village Restoration on Sunday, July 16, August 20
and September 10. The players will be dressed in uniforms of the day when the Mineola Washingtons and the
Hempstead Eurakas come to bat.
The game was called "Base Ball"
in I860 when "strikers" swung at balls
made of leather and yarn. Base Ball
1860s style will be played on Sunday,
July 16, Sunday, August 20 and
Sunday, September 10 at 2 p.m. at
Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

baseball and baseball history will
enjoy these re-creations of games
between the Mineola Washingtons
and the Hempstead Eurekas. Ihe cry
of "striker up" will signal the start of
the game.
fhe game will be played using 19th
Century rules and reproduction equip­ment.
A fly ball caught on the first
bounce is an out, a regulation helpful
to outfielders since padded mitts had
not yet become standard equipment.
Other rules dictated that the ball be
pitched underhand and no higher than
waist level, making the sport much less
of a pitcher's game than modern
baseball.
To add to the summertime atmos­phere
at the village, 19th Century
music will be played each weekend
afternoon during July and August. On
July 16, fiddle music will be played,
and on August 20, the Old Bethpage
Village Brass Band will perl'orm.
Old Bethpage Village Restoration
is operated by the Museum Services
Division of the Nassau County
Department of Recreation and Parks.
It is located on Round Swamp Road
in Old Bethpage, one mile south of
the Long Island Expressway, exit
48. The Village is open six days a week
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed
on Mondays. Admission to the his­torical
village ends one hour prior to
closing. A cafeteria, museum store and
picnic area are locatedon the premises.
Admission to the Village is $4.00.
S3.00 for Nassau residents and S2,00
lor children, ages 5-17, and Senior
Cilii'ens age 60 and over. Parking is
free.
