of Liberty, Ellis Island and Battery
Park will be America's Cup and/or
Olympic challengers representing
eight nations. For the first time in the
history of the race, the Soviet Union

Crews from Australia, France,
Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand,
the Soviet Union, Sweden and the

the vessels.

be preceded by the Cadillac Celebrity
Regatta, a PRO-Celebrity "fun" event
that teams the Cup skippers with
personalities from television, film,
theatre and sports. The regatta will
be held on Wednesday, June 28.
The races will be launched daily,
June 29-July 2, at 11 a.m. from the
South Street Seaport Museum on the
East River and will be visible to
spectators until 5 p.m. from Battery
Park in lower Manhattan, Liberty
Island, and Liberty State Park in New
Jersey.
'Reading to Write' at
Centrai Bouievard Schooi
Roma Torre of Channel 12 L.l.
News Station was interested in displaying
a Writing to Read Room for
viewers and explaining the purpose of
this fairly new program on L.I. She
contacted Mr. Gordon MacMillan,
former principal now working as an
instructor for the Writing to read
Program by IBM. Mr. MacMillan
recommended Channel 12 visit the
Writing to Read Room in Bethpage's
Central Boulevard School because he
considers it to be one of the finest
examples of the program on L.I. He
is impressed with the set-up of this
particular room; with the excellent
performance of Teacher Aid, Mrs.
Lorraine Carley, in helping to keep
the system (fperating so smoothly, and
with the dedication of the kindergarten
teachers in utilizing the program
to its fullest potential.
On Tuesday, June 6 from 9:00 A.M.
until 10:30 A.M. the camera crew and
Roma Torre viewed this impressive
operation. While capturing members
of Mrs. Casella's Kindergarten Cla,ss
as they eagerly worked at each station,
they learned about the program which
is intended to facilitate the learning
of reading through writing which at
an early stage is phonetic and
gradually is converted to book writing
by the middle of first grade. Ms. Torre
interviewed Mr. Ken Blau. School
Principal, and Dr. Regina Cohn,
Reading Supervisor for the Bethpage
School District, the segment aired on
the Night Edition of channel 12 News
which began at 10:00 P.M. and was
repeated hourly until 6:00 A.M. This
is the third time members of CBS.
