Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta today directed the County
Department of Public Works to expand to all County roadways a program
designed to assist firefighters in locating fire hydrants on County maintained
highways. Under the program, approximately 2,000 refiective blue markers
will be installed on County roads adjacent to fire hydrants during the ne%i
18 months and an additional 1,000 markers will be installed during the following
18 months. Several hundred markers were initially installed under the pilot
project. Pursuant to the ifiew directive, a total of 3,500 special blue markers
will be installed to assist firefighters responding to emergency situations on
County roads.
"Firefighters have often expressed their concern about their ability to identify
exact hydrant locations during dark evening hours as they approach the scene
of an emergency. Often precious life saving moments may be lost in the effort
to locate a fire hydrant in the dark. This program will aid firefighters by
enabling them to rapidly locate the hydrants and to initiate the appropriate
firematic operations on a timely basis when seconds can save a life or property,**
Gulotta added.
Under the program, the special blue markers will be phiced in the center
of all County roadways directly in line with fire hydrants at the curb. The
markers will be installed on all roads and will abo be a requured part of
all new road resurfacing projects.
