Springtime Chores at
Village Restoration
Long Islanders of the 19th Century
greeted the arrival of spring with a
flurry of springtime chores that will
be done at Old Bethpage Village
Restoration on Saturday and Sunday,
April 29 and 30 between 12 noon and
4 P.M.
County Executive Thomas S.
Gulotta said that visitors will watch
the villagers dusting, beating the rugs,
washing the windows, doing laundry
and ironing, all without the benefit of
electricity. The farmers will begin
harrowing the fields as the village
gardens are being prepared. Visitors
are welcome to beat a rug or help with
the ironing, Gulotta added.
Traditional music will be performed
intermittently from 1 to 4 P.M. during
this weekend. On Saturday, April 29,
there will be fiddle music, and on
Sunday, April 30, a flutist will play
melodies of the 19th Century.

...more than a pharmacist...
a friend, who'll be dearly missed.
After twenty nine years of service,
to the residents of Bethpage and the
surrounding communities, George
Holzmacher of Beth Drug is going to
retire. He graduated from the Brooklyn
College of Pharmacy and received
his license to practice Pharmacy in
1950. George worked for Eli Lilly
Pharmaceutical Co. for a number of
years, as a detail man, calling on
Doctors and Pharmacies on Long
Island. In I960 he came to Beth Drug
and became a partner of Hy Wiener.
In 1968 Mr. Wiener pa.ssed away and
Georges brother, Don, became his
partner. When George retires, at the
end of April, Richard Furrey, a longtime
employee, will become a partner.
Richard and Don will continue the
tradition of fine service to the Bethpage
community.
Georges trademarks of a smiling
face, an easy going manner, and an
expertly whistled version of a Benny
Goodman tune, will be greatly missed
at Beth Drug. His willingness to help
anyone in need will be remembered
by all. We can only wish for him a
long and very happy retirement shared
with his wife Gertrude, his children,
and his many, many grandchildren.
George served as a 2nd Lieutenant
in the Air Force during WWII. He
played Sax & Clarinet in his own band
during the 40\s and has been a league
bowler for over 20 years. He also is
an avid fisherman.
George is being honored by the
Rotary Club of Bethpage in April 20,
at the Fox Hollow Inn» for his many
years of service to Bethpage.
