VOL, 32 NO. 41 March 3,1988 to March 9,1988 20 CENTS PER COPY
The funeral procession proceeds to St. James Church of Seaford to pay a sorrowful farewell to rookie police officer Edward Byrne; as police officers from around the
country pay tribute to one of their fallen comrades.
Monday, February 29, the streets of
Seaford filled with more than 10,000
police officers from all over New York.
Many even traveled from as far away as
Ohio to pay their respects for a fallen
police officer. Mayor Koch and Police
Commissioner Benjamin Ward
marched in the funeral procession as
police officers and firemen lined the
streets, motorcycles idled, and helicopters
flew overhead.
Officer Edward Byrne, 22 years old,
was killed by a man who crept up on his
police car and fired five large caliber
bullets at point blank range into the car,
hitting him three times in the head.
Byrne had been guarding the home of a
police informant who had aided detectives
in making five arrests of alleged
drug dealers in South Queens. Police
suspect that one of those arrested,,
Thomas (Mustafa) Godbolt, may have
ordered the slaying from Rikers Island.
Mattho^v Bryne, Eddie's father, a 20
year police veteran and now a lawyer, is
heartbroken and outraged over the execution
of his son. Mr. Bryne has challenged
the world to do something. He
stated "Now the question becomes
"What are the decent people of the world
going to do because of his death?"lf our
son Eddie isn't safe sitting in a police car
representing and protecting us, than no
one is safe." He pleaded for all levels of
government to put money and resources
