Delligatti Announces Water
Conservation Measures
The Oyster Bay Town
Board has adopted an
amendment to Chapter 20 of
the Town's Plumbing Code
establishing new water conservation
measures, according
to Town Supervisor
Angelo A. Delligatti.
"Because of the restrictions
imposed on local water
districts and our dependence
upon a sole source aquifer
system, the Town Board
deemed it necessary to place
limitations on water use to
preserve and protect the
water supply for present and
future residents," Delligatti
explained. "We believe this
amendment, which establishes
water performance
standards for plumbing fixtures,
regulates the installation
arid o p e r a t i o n of
uiMfCfgjround lawn and
garden irrigation systems
and water-operated air conditioning
systems, and sets
new guidelines for commercial
car and fleet washes, is
an important first step in the
development of comprehensive
water conservation program
for the Town."
Delligatti said that in new
residential construction as
well as in replacement of
existing plumbing fixtures,
the Town will require that
all faucets, shower heads
and Hush valves meet certain
water saving performance
standards. New standards
will also apply to plumbing
fixtures used in new commercial
construction.
"A major addition to the
Plumbing Code applies to
lawn, field and garden irrigation,
requiring a permit
from the Department of
Planning and Development
for all underground irrigation
systems and a permit
from the Department of
Public Works for laying
underground piping within
a Town highway right-of-way,"
Delligatti stated. "In
addition, underground irrigation
system will not be
permitted to spray water on
public sidewalks, paved
areas or adjacent properties.
Systems which operate on a
timing device must meet
time and date standards set
forth in the Nassau County
Water Conservation Ordinance
No. 248-A-1987.
" A n o t h e r important
change," Delligatti continued,
"is that any expansion
or new construction of
commercial or. industrial
buildings will Require the
submission of a water conservation
plan to the Town.
In addition, all commercial
and industrial air conditioning,
refrigeration or other
water-cooling equipment
must be equipped with a
water-recycling system or be
converted to an air-operative
system by June 30.
1988."
Delligatti noted that the
amendment also sets June
30, 1988, as the deadline for
all commercial and Heet car
washes to install water-recycling
systems.
Penalties for violation of
any section of the new
amendment will be a maximum
fine of $350.00, imprisonment
of not more than 15
days or both for each individual
or corporation found
guilty.
Almost one week later, Long Islanders are still reminded of January 8th's record snow fall, which left many people digging
out from under almost one foot of snow. And this is only January ... two months and counting.
