uspicious Mre at Levittown Memoria
^ j^:Jte**' » *;.,, ,
The cleanup and reconstruction efforts have begun at the Levittown Memorial High School building, after a fire which occured at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February
23, ripped through a portable classroom. Fire officials have termed the blaze, which forced the evacuation of up to 70 adult education students, as suspicious.
Anne Marie Porcella Recovers
Ann Marie Porcella, the 24 year old
Bethpage newlywed is showing significant
signs of recovery. Ann Marie is still
weak from the beating she suffered February
14 while asleep in her Bethpage
apartment. Ann Marie's mother said
Ann Marie has been getting stronger
but is still prone to long crying spells. A
hospital spokeswoman said Ann Marie
was transferred out of intensive care
Sunday and has been talking, walking,
bathing herself. Her reflexes are
improving as she recovers from the
traumatic head blows. Ann Marie's
husband Thomas Porcella has been
charged with attempted murder and
assault.
On Monday District Judge Robert
Dolan modified a protective order over
the objections of Assistant District
Attorney William Dempsey. The modified
order allows 30 year old Thomas
Porcella to telephone Ann Marie.
Assistant District Attorney Dempsey
said Ann Marie is "deathly afraid" of
her husband and does not want to hear
from him.
Michael Berger, the husbands attorney
said he fought on principle for his
client's right to make the calls. "A man
should have a right to call his wife," he
said. "She doesn't have to take the calls.
She doesn't have to talk to him."
Mrs. Balbera, Ann Marie's mother,
stated that she hated to tell her daughter
of the judges ruling but that she had to.
She questions the sanity of the judges
decision. Mrs. Balbera said her daughter
has been extremely insecure and this
decision doesn't do a thing for her mental
condition.
District Court Judge Robert Dolan
rejected a prosecution request for a psychiatric
examination of the defendant.
The judge said the defendant can understand
the charges against him. Porcella
is being held at the county jail without
bail pending presentation of the case to
be grand jury. A grand jury began hearing
testimony Tuesday and is expected
to post a decision in the next several
days.

OYSTER BAY TOWN SUPERVISOR Angelo A. DeIHgatti signs a citation commending
John Cavalto of Bethpage for his role in the rescue of two children from an
apartment fire in East Meadow on January 12. Delligaiti presented the citation at a
Town Haii ceremony, which was attended by Cavallo's wife, Linda, and other family
members. Along with two fellow workers, John crawled through thick smoke and broke
into the apartment, where they found the two children, ages one and three, unattended,
one in a bedroom with the door wired shut making escape impossible without help.
