Apartment
On Thursday, September 15,
1988, a fire broke out at the
apartment building located on the
corner of Powell Avenue and
Broadway in Bethpage at approximately
4:30 p.m. The fire started
on the third floor and totally
destroyed one apartment.
The apartment building with is
50 years old and is operated and
owned by Mrs. Edith (Mickey)
Simmons and her brother Jack
Kelly did not have any fire insurance
taken out on it. There was
however a very elaborate fire
alarm system which was installed
to offset the lack of insurance. This
system was designed to set off a
siren and also turn on flood lights
at the first sign of smoke, however,
nothing was heard and the lights
never turned on that particular
day. Mrs. Simmons smelled the
smoke herself and when she
reached the third flood she found
the the apartment totally engulfed
in thick smoke.
When we spoke to Mrs. Simmons
she told us that she hoped
she would be able to take some
legal action against the company
who installed the alarm system.
This would be the only way she
could attempt to repair the damage
which is estimated at approximately
$50,000.
Mrs. Simmons and Jack Kelly
were relieved that no one had been
hurt in the blaze, although they
are quite concerned about the
repair of their aparment building.
