OYSTER BAY TOWN COUNCILMAN Thomas L. Clark (second from left)
chats with Joe Venetucci (second from right), director of the Grumman Volunteer
Employee Band, band member Marianne Rigolino of Hicksville and Bill
Penza of Grumman Public Affairs. The group kicked off the "Music Under the
Stars" concert series at Bethpage Community Park. Sponsored by the Cultural
and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Department of Community and
Youth Services, the concert was co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay Arts
Council, Inc.
A performance by Earl Washington
and Lois Hunt will highlight the
fourth week of "Music Under the
Stars" for Bethpage Community Park
District residents, according to Town
Clerk Carl L. Marcellino.
The program will be held at the
community park on Thursday,
August 4, beginning at 8:15 PM. In
the event of rain, the performance will
take place in the auditorium of Bethpage
High School, Cherry and Stewart
Avenues.
"Known as a 'singer's smger, Earl
Wrightson has been in show business
for more than 50 years," Marcellino
said. "He began his career singing on
local radio in Baltimore, later moving
to New York where his appearance in
Romberg's "New Moon" became his
passport to the Broadway stage. He
has a number of recordings to his
credit and has won numberous honors
for his work, including New York
City's highest cultural honor, the
Handel Medallion.
"Lois Hunt began her career by
winning the Metropolitan Opera's
'Auditions of the Air,' which resulted
in a five-year contract with the company,"
Marcellino said, "Despite her
success in the field of opera, she
sought to broaden her horizons and
moved into the popular milieu of
Broadway show tunes, making her
debut in 'The Sound of Music' She
moves easily between popular and
classical music and has recorded several
albums of both."
Marcellino noted that the program
is being sponsored by the Cultural and
Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of
the Town's Department of Community
and Youth Services.
For childreOi, CAPA will sponsor
"The All American Bug Show" on
Wednesday, August 3, at the community
park beginning at 1:30 PM.
"A one-woman performance by
Annie Hickman, 'The All American
Bug Show' is a u.nique combination of
mime, dance, music, dazzling costumes
and a zany cast of her bug creations,"
Marcellino said. "Since the
show debuted in 1981, Miss Hickman
has taken it on tour throughout the
United Slates and Australia, and it
has been seen by audiences in Tokyo,
Japan."
