Dr. Lois Rafenski
Receives Award
Dr. Lois Rafenski,a lifelong resident
of Bethpage and a Professor of
Nursing at the State University of
New York College of Technolgy at
Farmingdate, was recently awarded
the annual Chancellor's Award for
Excellence in Teaching by the State
University of New York. Rafenski is
among 54 CbanceUor*s Award

Jay Cohen of Old Bethpage, a June
1988 honor graduate of John F.
Kennedy High School, has won a
$24,000 Grumman Science and Engineering
Scholarship.
The award includes $6,000 a year
for four years toward tuition at any
accredited engineering college of
Cohen's choice, in addition, Cohen
will have a summer job at Grumman
through his college career and a
Grumman job offer after graduation.
He'll study electrical or aerospace
engineering at Princeton.
Grummaoi has awarded..i2 such
scholarships in 1988 to seniors from
Nassau and Suffolk high schools.
A student with a well-rounded high
school career, Cohen ranked 10th in
his calls of 220.
Among his acedemic achievemens,
he received the French, Math, Biology
and English awards.
In extracurricular activities, he was
a member of Students Against Drunk
Driving (SADD); Metmunc-Model
United Nations; Mathletes, the Math
Club Teaml Foreign Language Club;
Project Outreach, a community service
organization, and a Kennedy
Carnival volunteer.
In the community, he belonged to
the Whitman Flyers, a radio-controlled
airplane club. In sports, he
was a member of the 1985-86
Plainview-Old Bethpage Intramural
Team. Cohen also studied a college
level physics course.
Since starting the scholarship program
in 1944, Grumman has given
grants to well over 500 students, totaling
considerably over $3-million.
High school seniors in Nassau and
Suffolk Counties and Grumman
dependents anywhere in the country
are eligible to compete.
This year there was 166 applicants.
The group was narrowed to 24 finalists,
with 12 winners.
Under a policy begun in 1987, the
remaining finalists receive $1,000 a
year for four years at college and
summer employment at Grumman.
At least three of the winners must
be Grumman dependents. This year
seven of the winners were dependents,
and five out of the remaining 12 finalists
were dependents. Should a winner
drop out of the program, a finalist
receives the remainder ot the scholarship
money.
Scholarship finalists must earn a
combined verbal and math Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT) score of 1,200 or
higher. (1.600 is the highest possible
score.) Students are also required to
take the National Engineering Aptitude
exam.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens
and have a career interest in engineering
or major supporting field within
the scope of Grumman activities.
These areas include, in engineering:
aerospace, civil, electrical, industrial
or mechanical; and in science/technical
areas: applied mathematics, computers,
materials or physics.
Young Cohen is the son of Jerald N.
Cohen, a salesman with Andover
Togs in New York, and Janet Debra
Schuman, a software engineering
group leader with Grumman at its
Melville installation.
Applications to compete for the
scholarships are available in Nassau
and Suffolk high schools, public and
private.
