^ ^ Tt*;as not /or Glory
to be Won
But for Duty to Be Done.
And They Did It.^^
Memorial Day traditionally is a
day to remember and honor those
brave individuals who unselfishly
have given their lives in the line of
duty; and it was in this spirit of tradition
that two firemen. Captain
Joseph Dunn and Robert Hassett
were honored this Memorial Day in
Bethpage. A special dedication
ceremony was held on Monday,
May 30 where a portion of Broadway
in Bethpage was renamed
Dunn-Hassett Plaza as a memorial
to these two young men who made
the ultimate sacrifice as firefighters
ten years ago.
On May 25, 1978 at 12:06 am.
the Bethpage Fire Department
responded to a building fire at the
Brother's Three Pools Inc., located
at 4019 Hempstead Tpk., Bethpage,
New York.
Captain Dunn commanded the
members of Engine 904, the second
truck to arrive at the scene. Upon
arriving at the fire scene Captain
Dunn and Fireman Robert Hassett
along with others entered the building
in an attempt to extinguish the
fire. Due to a flash over condition
the flames quickly advanced around
the two men on the hose line. Immediate
evacuation procedures existed
for all; Capt. Dunn and fireman
Hassett attempted to escape from
the building but an exit was never
found.
Firefighting and Rescue attempts
were hampered by clouds of deadly
chlorine and poisonous gases from
burning plastics. The stubborn blaze
was fought by six neighboring fire
departments.
Joe Dunn had joined the Bethpage
Volunteers on November 3,
1969. In his 8 years in the department
he had risen to the rank of
Captain and had graduated from
Nassau County Firemanic Courses
in Officer's Training, Advanced
