Proudly, we pay
tribute to those
Americans of our
armed forces who
given their
lives in the
line of
duty.
Their great sacrifice is our
everlasting sadness....their
memory our everlasting
pride. Let us on this Memorial
Day, remember their
deeds, their courage and
their dedication.
On Memorial Day, Monday,
May 30,1988, thousands of pieces of
red ribbon will be seen fluttering
from trees, and poles, and stanchions,
all over Bethpage. It will
have been placed there by the scouts
of Boy Scout Troop 604, under the
leadership of Dr. Philip F. Lembo,
and also by members of local veterans'
groups such as The American
Legion, the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, and the American Legion
Auxiliary, as well as by members of
the Fire Department.
While Memorial Day (still sometimes
called "Decoration Day") is
the one most solemn day of the year
when we remember and honor the
memory of those members of our
armed forces who died in the service
of their country ... the red ribbon is
being displayed throughout Bethpage
as a specific reminder that
there are still many, many soldiers
who fought in the Vietnam War who
are prisoners of war or missing in
action. These are the MTA/POWs
who are being remembered and
honored with this little bit of red
ribbon.
It should also serve as a reminder
to put aside for this day such considerations
as politics, or race, or religion,
or color .. and focus on the
purpose of Memorial Day: To
remember and honor the memory of
those who died that we might live,
and live free! All who died, wherever
they died!
The Bethpage Memorial Day
Committee has planned memorial
services at 8:00 a.m., Monday, at St.
Paul's Church. The parade will start
at IO:OOa.m.,fromthcfirehouseon
Broadway. At least five marching
bands, floats, and units representing
the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Fire
Department, public schools and
parochial schools, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, the American Legion
and its Ladies Auxiliary, will march
in the parade ... this year led by the
American Legion contingent. There
will be several U.S. Army vehicles in
the line of march, which will go
north on Broadway to Benkert
Street, through Benkert Street to
Stewart Avenue, then north on Stewart
Avenue to the Bethpage Community
Park where, at 11:00 o'clock,
memorial services will be held for
our war dead. Color guards will be
there, as well as rifle squads from
both the American Legion and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars. Wreaths
will be laid at the base of the Memorial
Monument, and taps will be
played by a trumpeter from Bethpage
High School.
Placecards, prepared by the Memorial
Day Committee, will be displayed
by stores, and restaurants,
and by other businesses throughout
Bethpage. These placecards will
remind us of the time of the services,
the time of the parade, and even the
purpose of the red ribbon.
So come out and watch the
parade on Memorial Day ...join the
ceremonies at the Bethpage Community
Park. And remember and
honor the memory of those who
served and fought and died every
time you place your hand over your
heart as your flag passes by... every
time you hear a marching band ...
every time you hear the mournful
notes of "taps." They gave their lives
... we can give them a few moments
of silent prayer.
