Not many people could identify just where this photo was taken, although almost all Bethpage residents could say that they have frequented
this particular block quite often. BROADWA Y, in Bethpage...that's right...although it looks very different today. The exact date of this photograph
is not knowUy but thanks to the Bethpage Historical Society and Buddy Mazzara, we will be featurmg historical photos of Bethpage and
its surrounding communities each week in theBethpc^e Tribune.
Pictured here is Maurer's Hotel which was located on Broadway in
Bethpage, when Bethpage was called Central Park. It was a favorite
spot for Bert Acosta who was Commander Richard E. Byrd's Trans-
Atlantic Pilot in 1927. The boys in the photo are Alfred Franza,
Buddy Mazzara and Joseph Donolli.
A 25 year old Huntington Station
man was fatally injured after his car
struck a pole in Bethpage around
1:45 a.m. on May 5th. A passenger
in the vehicle is presently in the Nassau
County Medical Center, East
Meadow in critical condition.
Candelario Martinez, of 120 East
llth St., Huntington Station, was
operating a 1980 Chevrolet Cavalier,
southbound on Route 107,
Hicksville Rd., at a fast rate of speed
according to a witness, when the
vehicle struck the pole at the south-side
of the roadway and flipped end
over end. Martinez was pronounced
dead at the scene at 2:38 a.m. by Dr.
Winnicki, Levittown.
The passenger, Frederico Campos,
address unknown, was transported
to the Nassau County Medical
Center, East Meadow with
internal injuries and numerous
injuries about the head and body.
The car was unregistered and the
investigation is continuing by the
Homicide Squad.
