BHS Marching Band Performs In Washington D.C.
On the steps of the Capital Building.
by Michelle Kramer
THE BETHPAGE HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING
BAND ended their spring season with a turmoil of
excitement, enjoyment, and extreme muscial activity.
One of the highlights of their successful! marching
season was their trip to Washington, D.C. to make a
presentation at the Capitol. They gave a performance
during their 4 day stay in Washington. The presentation
took place on the center steps of the Capitol
Building in front of hundreds of visitors to the national
landmark. Their show included the songs: New York,
New York, Star Wars Epic, Theme from Back to
the Future^ Rock Around the Clock, and national
themes: Grand Old Flag and March America. All the
participants were appreciative of the guidance and
supervision given them by Mr. Fred Cohen, the band
director, and by the chaperones, and the superior musical
leadership given to the band by the drum major for
the 1986-87 school year, Debra Whitman. The trip
proved to be exciting, successful and beneficial to everyone
involved.
Another highlight to the spring marching season
was the marching band's participation in two Memorial
Day Parades. The first parade they participated in
was the annual Bethpage Memorial Day Parade on
May 25. At the completion of this parade the band
traveled to Douglaston, Queens to participate in a^
competitive parade. The Bethpage Marching Band
competed against 20 other bands also in the parade.
The Bethpage band presented numerous songs, but the
presentation which caused them to capture the 1st
Place Prize was their resounding rendition of Sing
Sing Sing, This 1st place award has sparked a new
inspiring attitude in the band and if this success continues
along with their positive outlook toward the
future, there's no predicting what they can accompHsh.
First place trophy received in Memorial Day
competition.
Gulotta Cracks Down On Head Shops
Nassau County Executive
Thomas S. Gulotta has
announced that the County
was embarking on a crackdown
on stores in the
County which sell drug
related paraphernalia. The
crackdown on the so-called
"headshops" follows a three
month investigation by Nassau
Police, Nassau County
Department of Drug and
Alcohol Addiction, Nassau
County Health Department
and County Attorney.
"The sale of materials
designed specifically to aid
in the use of illegal drugs is a
violation of section 850-853,
Article 39, of the New York
State General Business Law,
"Gulotta said. "With the
every increasing threat
which these illicit drugs
pose to our young residents,
we are acting now against
the offending stores and,
just as important, issuing a
stern warning to others: -
Here in Nassau we intend to
fight drug abuse and we
need everyone's help!!!"
Acting on the results of an
undercover Nassau County
Police investigation, the
County Attorney has petitioned
the New York State
Supreme Corut to move
against several merchants
found to be selling drug
related paraphernalia.
Those stores which were
listed in the County action
are as follows:
*General Store, 139 Tulip
Avenue, Floral Park —
undercover investigators
from the County Narcotics
Bureau entered the store and
purchased both a roach clip
and a coke spoon.
*The "Rockin Robin"
concession stand at Tri
County Flea Market,
Hempstead Turnpike,
Levittown ™ narcotics investigators
bought a roach clip,
scale and hashish pipe,
•Tobacconist, Green
Acres Mall, Valley Stream -
Narcotics Bureau investigators
purchased a hashish
pipe, two coke spoons and a
crack pipe.
*Utopia Smokeshop, 3
Newbridge Road, Hicksville
~ investigators were able to
buy 2 hashish pipes, 2 scales
and a roach clip.
In addition, another store
in Nassau was so blatant in
its sale of material that the
police have turned over evidence
gained upon their
investigation to the District
Attorney for criminal
prosecution.
The action requested by
the County from the State
Supreme Court is the
following:
•Prohibition of all future
sales of drug related
material.
•Monetary damages of up
to $10,000 per sale.
"This action should serve
deaf notice to all merchants
in our County that we do not
intend to allow our younger,
more impressionable residents
to be swayed by the
easy sale of drug-using
materials.
we intend to pursue this
matter;" Gulotta concluded.
