Rally To Block State Aid Proposal Games Demonstrations At Mitchell Park
Senator Norman J. Levy
(R, C-Merrick) is urging
school superintendents,
school board members,
PTA r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s,
teachers and other interested
residents from Nassau
County to attend a rally on
Tuesday, March 11. 1986, in
the "Weir (first fioor) of the
Legislative Office Building
(LO«j in Albany, starting
promptly at 11:15 A.M., to
mobilize efforts to block
Governor Mario Cuomo's
state aid to education proposal
and replace it with additional
state funding to insure
fairness and equity for Nassau
County schools.
Levy, who has proposed a
$550M increase in State Aid
to Education or 74% more
than the 316M increase proposed
by the Governor,
explained that the State Aid
to Education formullar as
proposed by Governor
Cuomo in the Executive
Budget, is regionally devi-sive
because it directs large
increases in State Aid to
New York City schools,
while failing to recognize the
needs of Nassau County
School Districts.
"The effects of the Governor's
Education Aid proposal,
if enacted, would have
a far reaching impact on
Nassau County's school
children and taxpayers,"
said Levy, concluding, "I am
hopeful and expectant that
our combined lobbying
efforts will be successful in
defeating the Governor's
unfair and inequitable
proposal."
Public Power Study Approved
The New York State Senate recently approved a bill to
appropriate $500,000 to support an investigation of the
feasibility and economic viability of public power on Long
Island, Senator John R. Dunne (R-Nassau), a sponsor of the
bill, has announced.
The possibility of providing electric sprvice through a
public entity has been discussed by a.number of government
and private sector leaders and has sparked great public
interest among Long Island residents. Such a step would
have enormous implications for the social and economic
future of Long Island and the state as a whole.
Senator Dunne said that since the precise measurement of
the benefits and specific impacts of public power are not
presently known, an investigation is needed. The analysis
would study the meains by which public power could be
implemented on Long Island, the feasibility of cornpletinga
transition to public power and the measurernent of the
benefits from public power, for ratepayers and the Long
Island community.
"The funds appropriated in this bill%ill be usedjo finance
a review and analysis of public power by economists,
accountants, legal experts, financial consultants and public
utility experts," Senator Dunne-said. "No responsible proposal
to move public power on Long Island can or should
proceed without such an analysis," he added.
Skilled performers in
various sports events
will put on a series of
"show and tell" demonstrations
at the New
York State Games for
the Physically Challenged
at Mitchel Park
on Long Island, May
29 through June 1,
because many youngsters
never had an
opportunity to learn
how they, too, can
strive for excellence.
The new and expanded
clinic-type programs
at the games will have a
two-fold purpose, it
was explained by Mrs.
Susan Gordon Ryan,
Project Director for the
Games, which are
being coordinated by
the Long Island Region
of the state office of
Parks, Recreation, and
Historic Preservation
in Babylon.
"First, we realize
that many of the young
persons in the 8 to 21
range for the games,
never before have had a
chance to learn how to
compete in a sport that
is particularly appealing
to them," she said.
"So we will have these
experts come to show
them how they can do
it. Second, every young
person watching these
demonstrations then'
will have an opportunity
to compete and perhaps
become a winner."
Sonja Kuntzler, the
Games Director,
emphasized that there
will be ample time after
the Demonstration
events for participants
to try for themselves
how to work on such
activities as archery,
gymnastics, volleyball,
equestrian specialties,
golf, tennis, and karate.
Some of the events
already are scheduled
for time periods that
will fit in with the overall
program.
