Drill Planned
For Shoreham
The recent decision by the
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission (NRC) to hold
a drill of the Long Island
Lighting Company's emergency
response plan for its
Shoreham Nuclear Power
Station was hailed by
LILCO Chairman William
J. Catacosinos as "a significant
and positive step
toward receiving a full
power license of Shoreham."
• In a recent announcement,
the NRC instructed
the Federal Emergency
Management Agency
(FEMA) to conduct the
exercise, which would take
place in January or
February.
In bis statement, Catacosinos
also said, "a fuH-scale
exercise, supervised by
FEMA, will invite public
review of the response plan
and will demonstrate the
effectiveness of the plan's
emergency response proce-,
dures to the public.
"Last month, the Shoreham
plant staff successfully
completed operational testing
at power levels of up to
five percent. During the
three-month test program,
supervised on-site by NRC
inspectors, the staff performed
thousands of tests of
plant systems and operations.
The successful completion
of the low power
testing program indicates
the plant is ready to proceed
toward providing Long
Island with much needed
power."
The drill will be conducted
with federal
employees and an outside
contractor filling the roles of
state and local officials, who
have refused to participate
in emergency planning for
the 809 megawatt plant.

JFK Girls Did It!
Congratulations fo to J.F.K. Jr. H.S. Girls
Soccer Team. They finished up their season undefeated
- 8-0-0.
The secret of success was due to great team
work and skill. Only five goals were scored
against them due to the outstanding goal tending
of Gina Bafundo with 26 saves.
The total amount of goals scored by us was 39;
14 of which were scored by Stefanie Christion,
Nancy Yigdal and Carol Croan were good for 5
each also 4 for Jennifer Spidell.
Thanks to the aggressiveness of Carol Croan,
most of the games played were on the home half of
the field. Super defensive force prevented much of
the action from the opposition.
