New Chief At St. Francis
Gruminan To Be Part Of
Strategic Defense Weapon Team
Rep. Norman F. Lent (R-4-NY) today announced the
U.S. Department of Defense has awarded the Grumman
Aerospace Corporation of Bethpage, New York, a $20 million
contract to develop the. Strategic Defense Initiative's
(SDl) Bopst Surveillance and Tracking System (BSTS).
The SDl concept is designed to destroy attacking nuclear
weapons before they can reach their targets. Grumman will
assist in the 12 month program to defme and research the
BSTS phase of the SDL
"The Secretajy of DeferiseV selction of the Grumman
team is a tribute to their outstanding cajpabilities and demonstrated
expertise in aerospace technology and engineering,"
said Rep. Lent. Grumman Corp. of Bethpage lies
within the Long Island legislator's 4th Congressional
District. " • •
The BSTS would serve as the "eyes" for a potential ballistic
missile defense system. It would give the critical first
warning of a ballistic inissile attack, sensing the missiles
immediately when lift from their launchers.
This electronic warning system would far exceed existing
early warning systems. Under BSTS, the tracking and target
characteristics data of the enemy missile would be immediately
relayed to the weapon interception system for possible
engagement of threatening targets. ?
. "The technology developed as part of the SDl is the way
of the future in nuclear defense strategies, arid Tm confident
that Grumman Corporation will make significant contributions
to that effort," Lent concluded. , 'i-
The Grumman Aerospace Corp. support^ team will consist
of Boeing Aerospace Company, Seattle Washington; Computer
Sciences Corp,, Moorestown, New Jersey; ITEX
Optical Systems, La Jolla, California; and SPARTA, Inc.,
