Thanksgiving Yesterday
Tasty foods and baked goods, from recipes dating back to the 19th Century, will be
prepared when the old fashioned wood burning stoves, beehive ovens and large iron
cauldrons are-fired up for the annual Thanksgiving Preparation at Old Bethpage Village
Restoration.
Cooking activities are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18, and
again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 23, 24 and 25, from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.
A fat turkey or duck will be spitted and roasted in the reflector oven on the Williams
House hearth. Decorated pumpkin pies will brown in the Powell House brick oven and
additional goodies, chosen from a mouth-watering list of items that graced Long Island
tables in the mid-I800's, will biibble, bake and stew.
Late fall crops for winter eating were also preserved at this time of year. Several methods
of food preservation such as making apple butter will be demonstrated.
Additional activities on these days will include parlor music and a Thanksgiving target
shoot on November 17th and 18th. Costumed villagers will fire flintlock muskets and
caplock rifles to compete for prizes and food.
Old Bethpage Village Restoration, operated by the Museum Division of the Nassau
County Department of Recreation and Parks, is located on Round Swamp Road, Old
Bethpage.
