Yevoli's Actions
Ann Gold, Republican candidate tor the State Assembly
in the 13th district, today called upon her Democratic opponent.
Lew Yevoli, to abandon his "irresponsible" action
which is blocking Oyster Bay Town implementation of
resource recovery and which could end up costing
homeowners millions of dollars in new taxes.
She said she is "shocked" by Mr. Yevoli's "stonewalling"
of legislation in Albany to prevent private money — instead
of taxpayers' money — topay for the proposed Oyster Bay
Town resource recovery plant to replace the Town's landfffl
at Old Bethpage.
" 'Stonewalling' is not responsible," she charged, "Let's
get this issue resolved in a way that's environmentally and
fiscally sound — and soon."
Ann Gold, a councilwoman in thie City of Glen Cove, the
only Long Island municipality having a resource lecovery
plant in operation, said: "My opponent blocked that technical
financing legislation during the last session of the State
legislature. It may not meet again until December. He may
be forcing Oyster Bay Town into a far more expensive
method of garbage disposal. He's certainly delaying the
closing of the Town's landfill operation at Old Bethpage.
"His stubborn action is hurting both the environment and
the taxpayers," she charged.
She said: "The truth is that the legislation he blocked in
Albany did not propose any specific site for the plant. So all
he did was prevent the Town from financing the plant ~
wherever it will be ~ with private money instead of taxpayers'
money.
"Mr. Yevoli, as usual, is using scare tactics to intlame
rather than to enlighten residents on this serious problem.
He's polarizing neighbors and communities, which is the
worst possible way to address any problem," Councilwoman
Gold said.
Councilwoman Gold said Yevoli's claim that his opposition
to the Town's proposed waste-to-energy plant is based
on environmental issues is highly questionable. '
"Mr. Yevoli is muddying the waters by making environmental
accusations about the proposed site for the plant,"
Councilwoman Gold charged. "Why is he afraid of having,
all the facts examined according to State law?"
Councilwoman Gold further charged that Mn Yevoli
knows New York State has established a procedure for
ensuring that projects such as resource recovery are given a
thorough environmental examination to decide if, and
where, they are appropriate.
Pointing to the New York State law banning landfills on
Long Island after 1990, Councilwoman Gold accused Mr.
Yevoli of delaying the closing of the Old Bethpage landfill.
"Every day he delays implementation, he prolongs the operation
of the Old Bethpage landfill. That's irresponsible and
intolerable," she said.
Because the State environmental agency is yet to make its
determination of what sites are environmentally safe for the
resource recovery plant, Councilwoman Gold said she did
not believe she could take a position on where it should be
located.
She said: "There are hundreds of environmental details
that must be examined and weighed before anyone, and that
includes Mr Yevoli, could honestly state that the proposed
project on the site of the Town's old incinerators in Old
Bethpage is the right or tl^e wrong place for such a project.
I'm still asking questions and seeking information."
Councilwoman Gold noted that Mr. Yevoli's actions alsp
may force the Town to haul refuse to a landfill off Long
Island. "That system could cripple the taxpayers and put
them at the mercy of out-of-town landfill operators who can
raise fees or suddenly stop accepting Town refuse."
