Honors and Remembrances
Christopher Posch (left), ot Plainview, N.Y., and graduate
of the Manhattan College Class of'84, was awarded the
Joseph J. Gunn Alumni Senior Medal by Brother John
MuUer, F.S.C., (right), executive vice president of Manhattan
College, at the College's Spring Honors Convocation
recently held on the College's Riverdale campus.
The medal "is presented each year to the graduating student
who had made the most significant overall contribution
to the College and who reflects the qualities of character,
leadership and service ..." read the citation prepared in his
honor. Mr. Posch was selected from aniong-SOO undergraduates
for his superior academic, cp-curricula and extra cur-ricular
achievements.
Christopher is a graduate of Plainview Old Bethpage
High School.
Mr. Posch was just as involved off campus as he was on,
volunteering his services as a tutor at Casita Maria Community
Center in the South Bronx, as a volunteer worker at
St. Peter's Shelter for Homeless in Yonkers and the assistant
leader of Our Lady of Mercy Folk Group. He also was
coordinator of the St. Pius X Antioch Group, a retreat *
group for high school students on Long Island as well as
both editor and writer of Follow, a rnonthly Catholic newspaper
for teens on Long Island.
• A member of Who's Who in America's Colleges and
Universities, Mr. Posch has spent his vacation from Manhattan
College in Kentucky as a member of the Appalachian
Projects where he helped build homes for the poor of the
area. He has also spent a summer in Jamaica where he
taught third grade orphans. He expects to return to Kentucky
this summer to resume this work.
The Ward Melville Valedictorian Award was presented to
two Plainview residents at the SUNY at Stony Brook graduation
on May 20th. Jeffrey Kaufman and Stephen T.
Mernoff, 1980 Plainview-Old Bethpage High School graduates,
shared this honor for attaining the most outstanding
academic records during their four years at Stony Brook. In
addition, they received recognition and awards for leadership,
research and excellence in their fields. Mr. Kaufman
completed a double major in Electrical Engineering and

Legion; and Ernest Eglin, Past Commander of the V.F.W.
After the services came the Annual Parade arid ceremonies at Bethpage Community Park, where Assemblyman Fred
Parola was the guest speaker. He is shown here with (from left to right): Enrico Carpentiere ~ Commander of American
Legion Post 86; Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Salvatore R. Mosca; Kay Mazzie -Secretary of the Parade Committee;
Marie Rusch - President of American Legion Auxiliary; Fred Parola and Bob King ~ American Legion past president,
after wreaths were layed in honor of our veterans who have insured our freedom.
In his remarks, the Assemblyman stressed that while words in support of liberty are important, the true significance
of Memorial Day is our observance of those who took action and arms to defend our nation and its values.
