Ik a few days the primaries and oonTentioni for the nomination of candidates for town offices will take plaee. There are numerous candi- Aatea in the field, and the people are preparing for the contest with a determination to have none but the beat aelected. This is a good sign and should their efforts be ancceieful we may expect better goTemment than ever, In the past tbere baa been too much apathy among the taxpayers in the direc¬ tion of selecting officers, but they bare awakened to the importance of the situation and propose to make their influence felt in the pri¬ maries and con Ten tions.

Thk cause of the disaster to tbe Imttleship Maine is still unsolved and will probably remain so for soma time. The Board of Inquiry returned to Key West on Monday and it is said will make no official report to the Government until a second investigation is made Tbe work of the divers will be reported daily to the Board, and from this 9ource information that will throw
"Aliasijjji light on tbe subject is cted.
.Vhile the American people have (oi'ined aome decided opinions as to the cause of the Maine's destruction, moderation has prevailed and judg¬ ment will not be pronounced uutil tbe complete and final report of the Board of Inquiry has been made.
The events of tbe :^eek have serred to furtber complicate mnt¬ ters between the United .States and Spain over Cuba, and the atti¬ tude displayed by the Dons has not been of tbe kind that bespeaks friendliness and courtesy.
Meanwhile our government has net been inactive. Forts and other ¦ea-ooast defen ses are being manned, war abipa stationed at impurtant points, and every pi-eoitutiun tuken to meet any outbreak of hostiliticH on the part of Spain,

Th« Queens County Board of Superriaors will meet at Bamum Island to-day fFriday.) It is inti¬ mated that the proposition to sell tba Island and buildings tUereou will be freely discussed. Th« Town Assessors have finished the work of apportioning the prop¬ erty annexed to Qreater New York. The total amount comprises 4,2.38 piece*, of which 2,250 are loU on mape of land companies. The total aaaeaaed Talnation is about $4,000,- 000, which will reduce the town as- ¦eaament about one-eighth. f.,A> Ik a few days the primaries and oonTentioni for the nomination of candidates for town offices will take plaee. There are numerous candi- Aatea in the field, and the people are preparing for the contest with a determination to have none but the beat aelected. This is a good sign and should their efforts be ancceieful we may expect better goTemment than ever, In the past tbere baa been too much apathy among the taxpayers in the direc¬ tion of selecting officers, but they bare awakened to the importance of the situation and propose to make their influence felt in the pri¬ maries and con Ten tions. j^gaii- Thk cause of the disaster to tbe Imttleship Maine is still unsolved and will probably remain so for soma time. The Board of Inquiry returned to Key West on Monday and it is said will make no official report to the Government until a second investigation is made Tbe work of the divers will be reported daily to the Board, and from this 9ource information that will throw "Aliasijjji light on tbe subject is cted. .Vhile the American people have (oi'ined aome decided opinions as to the cause of the Maine's destruction, moderation has prevailed and judg¬ ment will not be pronounced uutil tbe complete and final report of the Board of Inquiry has been made.
