OLD HUTCHINSON HOMESTEAD BUILT ABOUT 1750
The Middle Island post office was located here from 1811 to 1835 and was
the home of Benjamin Hutchinson, the postmaster, who purchased the farm in 1804
from Benjamin Brewster. In those early years the mail was carried through the
Island by post riders on horse hack once or twice a week. In 1830 the mail was
dispatched from New York on Monday and Friday for Jericho, Coram, Middle
Island and Suffolk Court House (Riverhead). The first post office here was called
Brookhaven, and was so known until 1820 when the name of Middle Island was
adopted. This house was torn down and a new one built on the same site several
years ago by Donald Ferguson when he purchased the farm.
