Nassau Entertains Mr.N.Y.
Mayor Koch was warmly greeted at Gum Ying Chinese restaurant where
he and Executive Purcell held a press conference before lunch.
After lunch, Koch stopped at Nassau Democratic headquarters tor a visit
with party chairman Martin Mellman.
The city mouse visited the country mouse last
week, and seemed to enjoy his day very much.
Mayor Ed Koch was the guest of Nassau
County Executive Francis Purcell at lunch in a
Long Island Chinese restaurant. It was his first
visit to the suburbs since his famous interview in
Playboy, where he labeled rural areas as
"sterile."
Purcell wanted to give the Mayor a clearer
view of life on Long Island, so he invited Koch to
take a drive out to "the country" and visit. After
a many course lunch at Gum Ying in Hempstead,
Mayor Koch said, "I love the suburbs, I regret
any misinterpretation of my remarks."
Both political parties were uncomfortable with
the lunch date. Republican officials knit their
brows over the fact that Purcell all but endorsed
Koch for Mayor. Democrats took a dim view of
Koch lunching with a high ranking Republican
official. However, the two men seemed to be
very happy in each others company and fully
enjoyed the afternoon.
After lunch, the Mayor touched base on his
own turf when he stopped at Nassau Democratic
headquarters to talk with party chairman
Martin Mellman.
Kina Leads Nassau In Parade
Nassau County Comptroller Peter T. King was selected to lead the Nassau
county marching contingent up Fifth Avenue in this year's New York
City St. Patrick's Day Parade. King was designated for this honor by the
Nassau County Ancient Order of Hibernians. David Henshaw, who is
President of the Hibernians, stated that "Pete King has consistently
demonstrated his concern for freedom and justice in Northern Ireland
and has spoken out against British oppression of the Irish people".
Comptroller King has long been active in the struggle for human rights
in Northern Ireland. He is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians,
the Irish National Caucus, the American Irish Congress and the Irish-
American Labor Coalition. King accompanied Senator Al D'Amato on a
fact-finding mission to Northern Ireland in 1980 and, along with District
Attorney Denis Dillon, served on the International Tribunal in Belfast in
1981 which exposed the killing of innocent children and civilians with
plastic bullets by British soldiers.
Comptroller King stated that he was "greatly honored to lead Nassau
County in the St. Patrick's Day Parade - particularly because the late
Bobby Sands, who died on a hunger strike in protest against British misrule,
has been named as the Honorary Grand Marshal of this year's
Parade. Bobby Sands' hunger strike was one of the most courageous and
meaningful demonstrations against oppression in this century. I am
proud to march in a Parade which pays tribute to such an outstanding
champion of human rights as Bobby Sands".
Nassau County Comptroller Peter T. King of Seaford (1.) was designated
to lead Nassau County up Fifth Avenue in New York City's Annual St.
Patrick's Day Parade, and is congratulated by Edward Allen, the President
of the Irish-American Society of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens. Bobby
Sands, the deceased Irish hunger-striker, was selected as the Parade's
Honorary Marshal.
