Bethpage Legal Eagles
In a simulated courtroom, the legal action is underway. Participants
are, left to right: Chris Nugent, Steven Becker, stenographer Melissa
Amodio, Judge Richard Penkoski, witness Donna Dempsey, jurors Sue
Godick and Kathy Abrams and lawyer John Shaw. In the foreground,
Ariel Lenarduzzi and Lisa Varriale.
For the first time in the history of Bethpage
High School, the Business Law classes formed a
"legal team" of students to represent the school
in the Annual High School Mock Trial Tournament
sponsored by the State Bar Association of
New York.
The students who comprise the "team" are:
Donna Dempsey, Ariel Lenarduzzi, Richard
Penkoski, Jonathan Shaw, Christine Nugent,
Melissa Amodio, L-^ry Gilbert, and Lisa
Varriale. Alternates are: Steven Becker, Robin
Rubens trunk, and Kathy Conway. "Members of
the Jury" include Sue Godick and Kathy
Abrams.
Mrs. Rosalie Niemczyk, a 22-year member of
the Bethpage High School Faculty (Business
Education Dept. & Guidance) is teaching the
Business Law classes for the first time in her
career, and decided that it would be a very good
experience for the students to participate in an
authentic - type court case in the actual court-

room chambers. ; : , I
To facilitate the "Legal-Eagles'' preparation I
for the very competitive > tournament, Mrs. I
Niemczyk created a simulated courtroom in her I
classroom, complete with judge's bench, defense Jj
table, plaintiff's table, and jury box. The teacher I
accomplished this by searching for cast-off I
furniture and refurbishing it, etc. The ambiance I
that has been created is very mood-inviting to I
the courtroom situation. /?
In the Mock Trial Tournament, the Bethpage
High School "Legal Eagles" reached the third
elimination contest in the Long Island Regional
Division before being retired. Considering that
this was their first time "up at bat," a salute to
our budding local lawyers is in order.
Mr. Gerard McLaughlin of Eisenstadt,
McLaughlin, et al, Attorneys - at - law in Hicks-ville,
was the co-operating attorney coach in
addition to Mrs. Niemczyk, the faculty-coach.
State finals are the goal for next year.
Mrs. Rosalie Niemczyk is teaching the Business
Law class at Bethpage High School. It's
through her guidance and encouragement that
the "Legal Eagles" are entering this tournament.
