Inspects County
Nassau County Comptroller Peter T. King has conducted a personal
inspection of the Nassau County Correctional Center to investigate
overtime payments to corrections officers and jail overcrowding.
Comptroller King was accompanied on his tour of the prison by Jerome
P. Donohue who is head of the Nassau County Civil Service Employees
Employees Association and a corrections officer at the jail.
King's investigation was prompted by steadily increasing overtime
payments at the jail. Noting that there was a shortage of corrections
officers because the federal courts had prohibited any hiring at the jail
until a sex discrimination lawsuit was concluded, King stated that
"overtime is necessary in the short run. Otherwise, I could see this place
blowing up because of overcrowding and manpower shortages. But in the
long run the correctional center has to severely cut back on overtime by
hiring more personnel and expanding the facilities".
King stated that because the sex discrimination case had been settled,
twenty corrections officers would be hired within the week and another
twelve within the month. "These hirings should significantly reduce
overtime costs," King stated.
King further stated that construction of additional facilities at the jail
to house 114 inmates would be extremely beneficial and would relieve
overcrowding. This construction is scheduled for completion in February
1983.
In conclusion, King commended the administration and the corrections
officers for "doing an excellent job under extremely trying conditions".
King's office will continue to closely monitor conditions at the
Correctional Center.
Nassau County Comptroller Peter T. King (r.) recently toured the
County Correctional Center to personally investigate conditions in the
jail. King was accompanied by Jerome Donohue (c), the President of the
Civil Service Employees Association, and Corrections Officer Richard
Halm (1.).
