Jimmy Helps The Kids
A friendly and generous crowd gathered at the
Central Park Inn in Bethpage on Tuesday night
to support Jimmy Greco, former Bethpager, in
his Fifth Annual Help The Kids Nite. The event
was a success this year, as in previous years,
mostly because Jimmy worked hard both before
and during this once-a-year fundraiser, which
was his branchild over 5 years ago.
Jim thought that if people were going to gather
around the bar and have a friendly drink
together, why hot give the 'tip' money to a worthwhile
cause. So he got behind the bar (although
he is not a bartender), collected tips and gave
them to the Retarded Childrens Fund of the
Jimmy Greco, serving up drinks to the crowd collecting do
nations for retarded children. Seven hours behind the bar and
still smiling.
Bethpage Rotary Club. Since then he and the
club have been able to raise money each year for
the Society For Goodwill To Retarded Children,
Inc. in neighboring Melville, L.I.
Even though Jim lives in Florida now, he still
makes sure he comes 'home' to Bethpage each
Spring, to get behind the bar and raise money for
the kids. The first time he put his idea to work, in
1978, he raised $870.00. This year, he got a good
head start on that amount when his many friends
from Florida sent him up here with his pockets
stuffed with their donations.
While friends were sharing good times and
opening their wallets and checkbooks for the
kids, some very good impromptu entertainment
was offered by the Subway Serenade. A group of
five 'doo-wop' singers- who regaled the crowd
with songs of the 50's, followed by a glowing
rendition of New York, New York by Jimmy
Greco himself. During the course of the evening,
raffle tickets were sold on a C.B., donated by Nat
Wolin of Telemobile. The winner was a happy
Tony Morello, of A.R.M. Electric. All proceeds,
of course, were handed over to Jimmy for the
kids.
A final count-up, done by Jim and a few
'trusted' Rotary members, showed a grand total
of $1,600,000; A big thanks from Jim - and he will
be back again next spring to do it all over again.
When asked why he puts so much time and
-energy into this yearly endeavor, his answer is
"Because I have three beautiful and healthy
children, and this is my way of saying thanks."

Between 45 and 50,000 people watched the victory
parade celebrating the third successive
Stanley Cup won by the New York Islanders. The
four deep crowd cheered their heros as the line of
march passed by and at one point, as the parade
approached the Meadowbrook Parkway, the
sounds of joy and praise became deafening.
Along with other Long Island Fire Departments,
the Bethpage Fire Department took part
in the parade, and as you can see by this photo,
the firemen and their clown friends enjoyed the
celebration as much as anyone.
