Headed For Cancer Research
Gary Maini, a member of the junior class of
Bethpage High School, has been accepted for
participation in the research program to be
conducted at Roswell Park Memorial Institute,
this summer.
Roswell Park, located in Buffalo, New York, is
the cancer research arm of the New York State
Department of Health. A number of high-ability
secondary school students are chosen by the
institute each year, to work with staff scientists
on problems under current investigation. The
students are selected on the basis of aptitudes
demonstrated through their science studies and
ability to use rigorous scientific methods in
performing experiments. The session, which
begins on June 21st, exposes the students to an
atmosphere of intensive research by combining §§
actual laboratory experience with lectures,
seminars, and scientific films. WX$ *
Gary's attendance in the program was made
possible through financial support contributed
by Central General Hospital, Mid-Island
Hospital, Bethpage High School Dad's Club, and
the Bethpage Rotary Club.
This is the fourth consecutive year that a
Bethpage High School student has been accepted
by the institute for participation in its advanced-level
studies of carcinogenic disease. A letter
received from the institute expressed appreciation
for this excellent applicant. Mr. Bruce
Sweetland was Gary's sponsoring teacher.
