Fifth Annual Bethpage Dad's Club
Invitational Lacrosse Tournament
The 5th Annual Bethpage Dad's Club Invitational Lacrosse
Tournament will be held at the Bethpage High School Field
on April 11th & 12th starting at 1:00 P.M. Bethpage will be
hosting teams from Massapequa and Baldwin plus one
upstrate team, Fox Lane. The Tournament is held for the
benefit of the High School Scholarship Fund.
In prior years, teams from the Catholic School Conference
and other upstate communities have participated in the
Tournament. In 1979 Berner High School, Massapequa was
defeated by Bethpage (8-6). Bethpage had broken this game
open in the third quarter when John Poggie and Dan Boltja
scored back-to-back goals within a 42 second span. In 1980
Berner took the Tournament championship when Bill
Dempsey, their all-conference attackman, drove home an
unassisted goal with a minute left in the game to give Berner
a 7-6 victory over the Bethpage Golden Eagles. This year
Berner will be playing without either Dempsey or their ail-
American mid-fielder Scott Gerham. The Golden Eagles will
be missing John Poggio, AU-American attackman and Dave
Keenan, all-American goalie. Both are now playing for North
Carolina State University. Also missing from the Bethpage
line up will be all-conference players Kevin Walakovits
(Washington & Lee) and Rich Lipp (Adelphi).
This year Baldwin ranks high in the competition with two
outstanding players on the roster - Ed Geiger, 1980 all-league
midfielder and Dan Tracy, 1980 all-conference defenseman.
According to Fran McCall, coach of the Golden Eagles, Dan
Boltja, 1980 all-league player will be leading the Bethpage
attack along with outstanding players Wayne Rhatigan and
Tommy Draghi. Danny Dunn, 1980 all-league defenseman
will anchor a strong defensive squad consisting of Dunn,
John Sweeney, Tom Bianco and Rich Waters at goal.
All in all, says Coach McCall, the teams in the tournament
look quite strong and the competition should really be tough.
George McElroy, Principal of Bethpage High School, gives
praise to the competition and good sportsmanship shown
since the inception of this Tournament. It is his contention
that it is people in the Dad's Club, Coaches like McCall, the
athletic staff of the participating schools, parents, fans and
the athletes themselves, who promote the high quality of the
game of Lacrosse which is growing fast on a national level
especially in the institutions of higher learning. The coaches
from these top colleges and universities come to Long Island
first when they are seeking top-quality lacrosse players for
their teams.
One of the nicest parts of the Tournament takes place late
Sunday afternoon when all of the teams players and their
parents are hosted to a Dinner run by the Dad's Club vice-president,
Luise Greenberg and other club members assisted
by the High School Leaders Club. Another very important
aspect of this Tournament is the financial support given by
our local merchants for our very informative Lacrosse
Journal.
As you can see these Tournaments are the result of the
efforts put forth by many different persons and groups. We
need your support too. Come on down on Saturday April 11th
and Sunday April 12th and join us for Two exciting afternoons
of cheering our Bethpage Golden Eagles on to victory.
Admission is just $1:00 donation to the Dad's Club for the H.S.
Scholarship Fund.
Bill To Cut County Property Taxes By 25 Percent
A bill that could reduce Nassau County real estate taxes by
25 percent by having the state take over the cost of Medicaid
has passed the State Assembly under the sponsorship of
Assemblyman Arthur J. Kremer, Chairman of the Assembly
Ways and Means Committee.
Last year, Nassau County taxpayers paid $47 million,
toward Medicaid costs and the 1981 expenses are expected td
increase by almost 20 percent. County officials have been
complaining for years that a medicaid relief bill would allow
them to make sharp cuts in real estate taxes and take a great
burden off the back of the taxpayers. Nassau County has the
highest real estate tax rate in the United States.
Assemblyman Kremer stated, "I challenge the Republican
members of the State Senate to pass this bill as soon as
possible so that Nassau homeowners can get a sizeable
reduction in their property taxes. One of the key features of
this bill is a provision that mandates that the savings gotten
by the County are returned to the taxpayers in reduced taxes.
Too often the Nassau County administration has used its
surpluses for tiny tax cuts and never gives the citizens an
opportunity to get honest tax relief."
Concluded Kremer, "This bill represents the first ray of
hope our hard-pressed taxpayers in Nassau have had in the
last fifty years."
