VOL. 15 NO. 44 The Week of February 5 -11,1981 20 cants per copy
Year Of The "Handicapable"
For the second consecutive year the students of Old Bethpage School
collected more money and read more books than any other school in both
Nassau and Suffolk Counties. As participants in the March of Dimes
Reading Olympics they signed up sponsors who would contribute money
to the March of Dimes for each book read by that student. The race began
in November during Children's Book Week and ended after the Winter
Recess. The results are astounding!
At a schoolwide assembly on January 26 Maxine Feingold, Librarian,
announced that about 155 participants read over 3,000 books and collected
over $2,000. Students who read twenty-one or more books received gold
medals; those who read sixteen to twenty books earned silver medals
and bronze medals went to those who read eight to fifteen books.
Certificates of participation were earned by each of the medalists and six
others who read less than eight. Dr. Marvin E. Witte, Principal, Mr.
Maxwell L. Greenbaum, Assistant Principal and Mary Cleeves, March of
Dimes Coordinator, joined in congratulating these very deserving
recipients.
Representing each of the awards are (left to rightV Leslie Kraut, Neil
Levy, Sara Yaroszeufski, Anita Schindelheim, Naomi Nager and David
Simonoff.
Library Elevator To Aid Handicapped
Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Salvatore R. Mosca (center) has
reviewed the formal Agreement authorizing Community Development
Funds for the installation of an elevator at the Bethpage Public Library
with Library Board President, Claire Jackman and Director, David
Pinkwas. The federal monies, administered by the Town through its
Community Development Program are earmarked for removal of
architectural barriers to the handicapped.
The Library's Trustees have long been concerned that many handicapped
residents of all ages are, in effect, denied access to the many
activities that take place in the auditorium on the lower level because
they are unable or have great difficulty, going down and up the two flights
of stairs. The proposed elevator will remove that difficulty for most
handicapped situations.
Community Development Funds are expected to cover all but a small
nart of the project cost, with some library funds to supplement and to pay
for modifications to toilet facilities, so that they are made accessible to
the handicapped.
An architect has been engaged to prepare blueprints, specifications
and bidding documents with the expectation of construction getting under
way some time during the summer.
Career Day 1981
Mr Stu Agins, a Guidance Counselor at Plainview-Old Bethpage High
School, was a member of the planning committee for the Career Day Program
held at Adelphi University on January 13 and 14. More than 3,500
Nassau County high school students, including students from Plainview-
Old Bethpage, had the opportunity to speak with representatives of 70
career fields.
While the students explored their career interests, the Guidance Counselors
who accompanied them heard Mr. Herbert Bienstock, former
Regional Director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Mr. Arthur
Kunz, of the Long Island Regional Planning Board discuss "Career Projections
for the 1980's."
Pictured from left to right in the enclosed photo are Ms. Virginia O'Brien
