St. Martin Boys Win Big
In Tournament Competition
The St. Martin of Tours 7th grade CYO boys basketball
team, coached by JJon Frese, had a very successful season.
Entering two tournaments, the 7th grade boys took 1st place
in both of them.
They won the Holy Family Christmas Tournament by defeating
St. Ignatius 38-28, St. Aidens 40-36, and Holy Family
44-39.
They just recently won the St. Vincent De Paul Post Season
Tournament by beating St. Thomas 42-38, Our Lady of
Victory 52-51 (O.T.), and St. Vincent De Paul 50-49.
The team came in second place in their division, losing first
place in a heartbreaker to Our Lady of Mercy, 40-39, in the
final seconds of the game.
This St. Martins team is looking forward to a championship
season next year in the teen division. Their successful season
was due to outstanding play, and a lot of team spirit.

Bethpage Outstanding
In Long island Marine Competition
On Friday, March 27, the Bethpage Marine Fitness team
participated in the 1981 Long Island Youth Physical Fitness
Championship at the Hofstra University Fitness Center.
Bethpage was one of 21 schools participating. The program
consisted of five events starting with sit-ups and followed by
push-ups, standing broad jump, pull-ups and concluded with
a 300 yd. shuttle run. Two teams of six boys each represented
Bethpage High School. The "A" team consisted of Mike
Zaccardo, Larry Kassan, Nick Conocico, Joel Bach, Tom
Jackman and John Griffith. This team performed outstandingly
considering the fact this was their first year of competition
against some schools who have participated for the past
fifteen years. The final results had Bethpage second in
Nassau County beaten only by Berner High School and sixth
in the overall competition. The "B" team consisted of Tom
Herbert, Jose Ruiz, Charlie Maini, Peter Cafiero, Kevin
Laraia and Michael Lang. Our alternates were Robert
Maiello and Russ DeSantis.
Approximately eight of these boys will be returning next
year and with additional students entering this program the
future looks promising.
An outstanding job was done by Mr. Settino in preparing
the students for this tough competition.
