A Special Thanksgiving
It's a special thank you as Tricia Kantrowitz carves the Thanksgiving
Turkey for the young women who live in one of the Nassau Association
For the Help of Retarded Children's community residences. Tricia, a
houseparent along with her husband helps the residents, who attend the
AHRC vocational program or work in the sheltered workshops during the
day, with their living activities. Just a few years ago the future for many
of those in the AHRC program was bleak with little alternative except
institutionalization. It's thanks, too, from the taxpayer since the community
program costs far less than institutional placement. Altogether,
AHRC has ten community residences and eleven supportive living apartments
scattered throughout Nassau County with more in the planning
stage.
Bethpage Childrens Art Show
Damien Kraus receives his award for Best In
Show from Mr. George McElroy, for his pastel
abstract 'Love Dog.'
Entries in the Bethpage Children's Art Show
are on view in the Public Library on Powell Avenue
until November 27. The subjects are surprisingly
varied, from an autumn leaf collage to
seascapes to soft watercolors. This is impressive
when you realize that the entrants came from
grades Kindergarten to 6th. Each child paid 50c
to enter his or her artwork for consideration in
the art show run by The Friends of The Bethpage
Library and judged by George Von Kantor, Lucille
Kaye and Linda Veit. The show chairman
was John DeGuardi, Chairman of the Art Dept.
at Bethpage High School.
Prizes were awarded for Best In Show, First
Place in each category. Ribbons and certificates
for Second Prize in each category.
For Best In Show, the award went to Damien
Kraus, 6 yrs. old, for his pastel abstract called
Love Dog. Damien received a $50 bond presented
by Mr. George McElroy, President of The Bethpage
Rotary Club and Principal of Bethpage
High School.
The other winners were Mala Sawhney,
Kristen Powers, and Lisa Nicholaou, each received
1st prize in her age group category.
John DiGuardi, Show Chairman (L) and Leo
