Sign of Things To Come

O.K., Bethpage, get your shopping lists ready for the holidays because
King Kullen will be ready to accommodate you.
At least one week before Thanksgiving, the new King Kullen
supermarket on Stewart Avenue will be fully stocked and ready for
business. Many people turned out to file applications for employment
during the two-day hiring program conducted last week, well over 300,
according to scattered reports. A great number of these were asked to
come back for interviews and subsequent hiring.
An impromptu visit to the unfinished store this week showed a great
interior change, as all of you will notice soon. Everything inside is new
and up-to-date, right down to the computer type cash registers and
scales.
According to Mr. George Steinmetz, V.P. of Construction and
Maintenance for King Kullen, the finishing touches are being attended to
now, and the King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. is looking forward to the
Grand Opening. Bethpage is looking forward to that day also.
Bethpage Nursery Burglarized assau Irish Caucus
Endorses King
Somewhere, between the dark hours of Friday night and Saturday
morning, last weekend, Emil's Nursery on Stewart Avenue was broken
into -- AGAIN. This time, the entire cash register was taken, although it
was empty except for $20 in change, and hoisted over a six foot fence.
Emil and his family have lived at this location for over 60 years,
opening the nursery on his property 30 years ago.
Up until five years ago, there was no need for that six foot fence,
because Bethpage used to be that kind of place. No locked doors and no
fences, unless they were decorative. Unfortunately, times have changed.
Emil didn't want the fence, but after three robberies, he had no choice.
Since the fence, he still suffered two more break-ins. This time the cash
register was stolen, right out of the workshop, through the back planting
lot and over the six foot fence, without setting off any alarms.
The eighth squad detectives were promptly on the scene and at this
time are investigating.
