L.I. Fair in Bethpage
The Long Island Fair, which each year heralds
the long Columbus Day weekend, will be housed
for the last time this season under the huge gaily
striped tents at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
Hours are 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. daily from Friday,
October 9, through Monday, October 12.
According to Nassau Recreation and Parks'
Commissioner Abram C. Williams, the 1982 version
at Old Bethpage will move into a soon-to-be
constructed replica of the original Mineola fairgrounds
building.
The event, sponsored by the Agricultural Society
of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties,
will once again feature all the homespun hustle
and bustle of a typical country fair of the mid-
19th Century. The annual spectacular, which is
poordmated by the Nassau County Department
of Recreation and Parks, is one of the oldest continuing
agricultural exhibits in the United States
tracing its origin to 1841.
In addition to the poultry and livestock exhibits
there will be prize-winning displays of vegetables,
fruits and flowers grown in local gardens
as well as a large and varied array of needlework,
hobby and culinary products produced by
Long Island's homemakers and craftspeople.
An added feature of the harvest festival will be
the awarding of a free carved pumpkin each
hour.
There will be no end to the entertainment delights
available to young and old alike, ranging
from the Salisbury Puppets' production of Pin-occhio
to the mystifying necromancy, legerdemain
and delusion of Lawrence the Magician and

Bethpage Citizens Alliance
Supports State "Superfund"
The Board of Commissioners of the Bethpage Water
District has endorsed the establishment of a statewide
industry-supported fund to cover the costs incurred from
industrial pollution.
The Board declared its support for the clean-up fund and
for community "right-to-know" legislation after outlining the
history of its futile two-year effort to gain "redress" of
"hundreds of thousands of dollars" in well replacement costs
from the Hooker Chemical Company in Hicksville. The state
"superfund" would complement the already existing federal
fund, supporters say.
"We are pleased that the Bethpage Water District supports
strong public health measures like the clean-up fund and full
disclosure legislation," said William Steinmetz, Chairman of
the Bethpage Citizens Alliance. The Water Commissioners
appeared Thursday evening before 40 members and
supporters of the Bethpage citizen group at the Bethpage
Public Library on Powell Avenue.
"Citizens groups like yours are doing just the right thing,"
said Anthony Sabino, attorney for the Water District, "and
we're in this with you together.''
Sabino agreed to share district records of its two-year
struggle to force Hooker to pay up to one million dollars for
replacement costs of Bethpage Water District Well 6-1.
In November, 1977, the District formally charged Hooker
with responsibility for contamination of the well.
The Bethpage Citizens Alliance is one of 40 chapters in the
Citizens Alliance, a statewide citizen action organization.
