BETHPAGE DOES IT AGAIN
The Bethpage Swim Team came through again
as the overall champs of the Annual Nassau
County Division I Swim Conference (NCSC)
hosted this year by Parkwood Pool at Great
Neck. This division comprises the six most
highly qualified competitive teams from the
various Nassau County Towns and Parks.
Thanks to the superb guidance of Steve
Schenck and Mary Lou Rochon, our Bethpage
team performed brilliantly.
In individual events in such a contest, every
place except last, counts. Each team member
should be congratulated for their own personal
contribution to the overall victory.
All the swimmers swam their hearts out. They
really were outstanding in the individual events
in butterfly, and took six first place slots out of
eight races. BRAVO.
It is difficult to describe the history of a big win
like the Division One championship. Team
swimming was born in Bethpage with the
opening of the Community Park in 1964. Sixteen
years ago, many dedicated coaches started to
develop the present interest in community
organized swimming; among them Jim Forbes,
George Van Dormolen, Bob Kane, Sue Comer-ford
and Bob Hartman. Using the high school
pool in 1967, a small AAU swim club from

Bethpage families was formed. It provided a
cadre of swimmers with year round experience
for our high school Eagles and the Summer
team. Regular coaching of fine quality is
supplied under the guidance of Bob Forrest and
Cheryl Van Sickle. Off season swimming
continues in our facilities which is now U.S.S.
associated. The Swim Club is interested in
providing family participation in a great sport.
The swimming world offers an alternative
providing gainful involvement of our youth,
especially as compared to the devastating
damage of drugs and alcohol, leading to
