Plainview High School. Thomas Bianco of Bethpage High,
Leslie Lynn Grattan of Mattituck High, and Scott Alpert of

The 1981 Athlete-Scholars were presented their scholarship
checks by LILCO President, Wilfred O. Uhl, at a special
luncheon in the students' honor.
The award recipients were selected from a wide field of
candidates. Nominations were solicited from each high
school in the bi-County area. Criteria for selection included a
combined score of at least 1000 on the Scholastic Aptitude
Tests, considerably above the national average, and active
participation in at least two varsity sports:
A selection committee of professional educators
established the criteria for the LILCO Athlete-Scholar
awards. The committee also evaluated each nominee and
chose the award recipients.
Annually, LILCO awards plaques to those students in
Nassau and Suffolk Counties who receive their school's
nomination as its Athlete-Scholar. This year the program has
been expanded to include the bi-County, interscholastic
